Letter: League of Women Voters hosting essay contest

To the editor:

League of Women Voters Brown County invites students to write an essay about Redistricting. This year, 2021, is the year Indiana voting districts will be redrawn to adjust for any population shifts based on the 2020 Census.

Essay prizes will be awarded in two grade categories: Grades 7-8 and Grades 9-12:

First place: $200

Second place: $100

Third place: $ 75

The essay prompt is: Do current districts and the redistricting process in Indiana reflect democratic principles? Why or why not?

Essays must be submitted by the deadline, Monday, April 26 by midnight. Brown County students attending BCJHS, BCHS or home school students in Grades 7-12 are invited to participate.

Essays will be judged by volunteers in the Brown County Retired Teachers Association. We’re looking forward to awarding prizes to three students in Grades 9-12 and three students in Grades 7-8.
