ELECTION: Local voting statistics

Voter turnout percentages for Brown County weren’t immediately available tonight, but here are a few stats from the 2018 primary election:

  • Political newcomer and Brown County resident James Dean Alspach earned 25 percent of the local Republican vote against incumbent Congressman Trey Hollingsworth.
  • The closest race in the county was between Republicans Deb Noe and Kathy Grimes Smith for county clerk. Noe earned 48.5 percent of the vote and Smith earned 51.5 percent.
  • Incumbent county commissioner Diana McDonald Biddle earned a little more than half the vote in a three-way Republican race for her seat. She picked up 52 percent of the vote, compared to Ron Sanders’ 30 percent and former commissioner John Kennard’s 18 percent. Biddle will face Democrat Kyle Birkemeier in the fall, who earned 69 percent of his party’s votes vs. Jeff Fox’s 31 percent.
  • In a three-way race for the Republican judge nomination, Mary Wertz pulled 47 percent of her party’s vote. Current deputy prosecutor Tracey Yeager Stogsdill took 37.5 percent and public defender Jacob Moore took 15.5 percent. Wertz will face Democrat Kristopher Kritzer in the fall, who won 59.5 percent of his party’s vote over Greg Bowes’ 40.5 percent.
  • Six county-level races and six township-level races still don’t have full slates of candidates going into the November general election. There’s only one candidate for prosecutor, sheriff, coroner, assessor, county council seats in districts 2 and 3, Hamblen Township trustee and Jackson Township trustee. There are also still openings for candidates on all township boards. Democrats have until June 30 to fill vacancies on the ballot; Libertarians have until June 30 to have their convention; independent and minor-party candidates have until July 2 to file preliminary paperwork; and write-in candidates have until July 3 to file their preliminary paperwork. Consult the 2018 Indiana Election Calendar for details.

We should have precinct-by-precinct results to share later this week.
