Teen charged with illegal consumption after crash

HAMBLEN TWP. — A Mooresville teen has been charged with a misdemeanor in Brown County after police say he showed up drunk at the scene of a crash he had caused earlier.

Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Eggebrecht responded on Feb. 17 to a crash at the intersection of Hornettown and Fruitdale roads. He found a vehicle in a ditch, but no driver.

Tire tracks showed the vehicle had been westbound on Hornettown Road before starting to turn onto Fruitdale Road, his report said.

A wrecker was dispatched to get the vehicle, and while they were there, the driver, Drew R. Collins, 19, arrived.

Collins told police that he was westbound on Hornettown Road at around 2 a.m. when he looked down at his cellphone to use his GPS and ran off the road, the police report said. He said he was picked up by a friend and tried to make arrangements to get the vehicle towed.

Eggebrecht informed Collins that he must report a crash to police if it damages another person’s property.

While speaking with Collins, Eggebrecht reported that he was chewing gum and had bloodshot eyes. Collins denied having anything to drink, but a breath test showed his blood-alcohol content to be 0.03. Collins then admitted he had last had something to drink at about 10:30 p.m. the previous night, the report said.

A culvert and pipe were damaged, the report said. The property owner was notified.

Collins was charged March 7 with illegal consumption of an alcoholic beverage, a Class C misdemeanor.
