COUNTY NEWS: Permit issues could result in more Maple Leaf spending

The Maple Leaf Management Group has yet to receive a permit from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources that would allow them to move dirt from the music venue work site into the flood zone.

Part of the music venue’s 13-acre building site is in a flood zone, and until the group gets the DNR permit, it can’t place the dirt exactly where it had planned.

Contractor Brandt Construction is estimating it will cost about $22,000 to move the dirt twice, said management group co-president Barry Herring. “I am warning everyone, it’s coming,” Herring said.

Herring said there are also some questions regarding the venue’s driveway, soil compaction, and the size of gravel that will be used. That could cause other costs if plans need to be changed.

Management group construction committee chair Jim Schultz said his committee has been meeting about the issue. “We’re just trying to get to that point where we do it right, but spend the least amount of money as possible to get it right,” he said. He said he was hoping to get estimates on those solutions by the end of last week.
