Brown County braces for ‘dangerously cold’ weather

School has been called off for the next two days and plans have been made to offer “warming centers” as Brown County braces for a blast of sub-zero weather Wednesday and Thursday.

Brown County is under a windchill warning from 10 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29 to 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31. “Air temperatures well below zero combined with gusty winds will produce wind chills that could cause frostbite to exposed skin in 10 to 30 minutes,” the Brown County Emergency Management Agency warned.

Weather stations’ forecast temperatures ranged from 7 below zero (feeling like -33 with windchill) to 5 below zero (feeling like -26 with wind chill) between 9 and 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Brown County Schools Superintendent Laura Hammack made the call around 11 a.m. today to cancel classes Wednesday and Thursday.

On Wednesday, students will have their first eLearning Day, accessing assignments online which their teachers will post. Thursday will be treated like a regular snow day, meaning students will have to make it up at the end of the year. The final day of the semester is now scheduled for Tuesday, May 28.

Access Brown County also has canceled the running of its public transportation service on Wednesday and Thursday.

Mother’s Cupboard Community Kitchen is closed today and Wednesday; staff haven’t decided yet about Thursday.

Residents are advised to take precautions against the cold.

“The bitterly cold temperatures can lead to rapid onset of frostbite and hypothermia,” EMA reported. “Also, the cold temperatures could cause frozen pipes and problems with automobiles if precautions are not taken.”

Brown County Emergency Management has offered warming centers as need arises. Call the Brown County Dispatch Center’s non-emergency line at 812-988-6655 for more information.
