Free mountain bike rides offered first Tuesdays

Trek Women’s Advocate and professional guide Kate Nolan will lead women’s mountain bike rides for riders of all skill levels from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on first Tuesdays in Brown County State Park. The first ride will be Feb. 5. Meet in the parking lot closest to the north gate.

While the rides are free, park entrance fees may apply.

Weekly yoga classes offered downtown

Various yoga classes are offered at Simply Fitness, 47 E. Main St.:

  • 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Feb. 26 — Explore basic yoga movement and postures utilizing props such as a yoga block and bolster pillow. Cost: $15.
  • 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Feb. 5 to 28 — Community lunchtime yoga sessions geared to any fitness level. Cost: $5.
  • 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9 — Rebecca Redfern of Redfern Healing and Fitness will lead a warm group yoga session and offer a choice of 45-minute massage or facial after yoga. Warm group yoga uses heated stones and warm bamboo placed on the body. Cost: $75.
  • 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10 — Katie Fulton will include an exploration of yin yoga practice, holding postures for 45 seconds or more, with essential oils. Yin targets connective tissue, bones, muscles and the use of ligaments. Cost: $21.
  • 6 to 7:15 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24 — Erica Weddle of Simply Fitness, Leah Craig of Roots of Healing Acupuncture and Danielle Wolter Nolan of SoulfulTrail will offer an evening of restorative yoga, acupuncture and Thai massage. Cost: $50.
  • Weddle offers 45-minute private yoga or personal training sessions. Cost: $30.

Winter hikes planned at state park

A series of winter hikes is planned at Brown County State Park. All hikes will begin at 11 a.m. and will cover between 2 and 4 miles over rugged or sloppy terrain. Leashed, friendly dogs are welcome. All hikes meet at 11 a.m. on Saturdays at the Nature Center.

  • Feb. 9 — Curious quarry: Carpool to trailhead at Horse Trail A; hike about a mile-and-a-half to Trail 17 for half a mile; total about 4 miles with some sloppy, some rugged areas and time to explore quarry area.
  • Feb. 16 and March 30 — Lake That Never Was: Carpool to trailhead at Horse Trail B, descend on rugged trail and cross several creeks to Hidden Valley and to dam site; about 2 miles total lasting about 90 minutes.
  • March 2 — Boulder in tree: Carpool to Horse Trail A, hike a short distance and continue on rugged off-trail trek for majority of hike; total about 2 miles lasting about 90 minutes.
  • March 9 — Ten O’Clock Line Nature Preserve: Carpool to a fire trail, hike about one mile to Horse Trail B, then around nature preserve; total distance about 2 1/2 miles for about two hours.

New season of classes starting at YMCA

The Brown County YMCA starts a new session of classes Monday, Feb. 11, including some new offerings, such as:

  • Cycling classes will be offered from 6:15 to 7:15 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. Saturdays.
  • PiYo, a mix of Pilates and yoga, will be offered from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. Fridays.
  • A barre fitness class will be taught from 7:30 to 8:15 p.m. Thursdays and 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. Fridays.
  • A new session of core conditioning has been added from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Fridays.
  • Kickboxing classes have been expanded to two nights a week, from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

No classes will be taught during spring break, March 18-22.

In addition to adult class expansions, the Y also will be offering Total Tumble Mondays this session. They’re designed to help families participate in tumbling classes that best fit their ability levels, while making it easier for families to utilize the facility. “By offering this class cluster during child watch operating hours and peak fitness hours, families and children can enjoy their own classes with a convenient and affordable option,” says Program Director Heather Ford.

Beginner tumbling and intermediate tumbling circuits will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Mondays and advanced tumbling is from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tumbling classes are for children of all ages; a $10 additional child discount is offered for multi-child families.

Bicycle ‘death march’ to take place in March

NORMAN — The “death march” — a bicycle race for teams of two to cemeteries in and around the Hoosier National Forest — will begin and end Saturday, March 9, at the Midwest Trail Ride Horseman’s Camp, 1264 Hunters Creek Road.

Teams will be required to reach five checkpoints. Teams can use any route and visit them in any order. Bonus time can be earned by visiting additional checkpoints along the way.

Check-in starts at 7:15 a.m., the race starts at 9:30 a.m. and all riders must finish by 6 p.m. Awards are presented at 4 p.m.

Child care available weekdays at YMCA

The Brown County YMCA offers child care for two hours at a time while parents are in the building.

The service is free to Y members and for $2 per child for non-members. Children ages 6 months to 8 years old are welcome. Child watch hours are from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.

Disc golf league plays every Tuesday

The Brown County Disc Golf Alliance plays regularly in Brown County and new members are welcome.

The group plays Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. at Deer Run Park or at the Brown County Country Club, alternating months. In February it’s the club.

Players of all skill levels are welcome, including those who have never played before. Loaner discs are available.

Kyokushin karate training offered

Sensei David Michaelis is offering training in traditional kyokushin karate.

Classes are for students 16 and older twice a week, at 6 p.m. Thursdays and 4 p.m. Sundays.

Michaelis has trained and taught kyokushin karate for more than 35 years. Kyokushin, Japanese for “the society of the ultimate truth,” is a style of stand-up, full-contact karate. It is intended to foster humility, perseverance and nonviolence and to provide a foundation for improving physical and mental discipline.
