Joseph “Joe” L. Carmer

Jospeh “Joe” L. Carmer, 77, of Nashville, passed away at 4:20 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 26, 2019 at Homeview Health and Rehabilitation Center-Franklin.
Joe was born April 26, 1942, in Columbus, Indiana, the son of Paul David and Mary Helen Koocker Carmer. On Oct. 6, 1985, he married Nancy Goen.
Mr. Carmer worked as a welder for Cosco and retired after 35 years of service. He was a founding member of the Harrison Township Volunteer Fire Department and served 12 years as a volunteer fireman. Joe enjoyed working with his hands and helping others. He cherished spending time with family, especially his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends. Joe also loved to fish.
Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Nancy; children, Sherry Pennington of Columbus, Gail (Donnie) Burton of Edinburgh, Laurie (Greg) Shelton of Columbus, Robin ( Tim Callahan) Carmer of West Port, Michael (Racheal) Carmer, also of Columbus, step-son, Steven Davis of Greenwood; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers, Paul Carmer, Rick Carmer, Bob (Connie) Carmer, all of North Vernon, Bernard Carmer of Florida; sisters, Shirley Newton, also of North Vernon and Erma Mae Carmer of Georgia.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son Jeremiah Carmer; sister, Beverly Sue Carmer Banks and brother, Don Carmer.
The funeral service will be conducted at 12 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31 at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home, 1029 Washington Street in Columbus, with Rev. Rick Clayton and Rev. Wes Jones officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service Tuesday at the funeral home. In keeping with the family’s wishes, cremation will take place after the funeral service.
Memorial contributions may be made to either of the following, Harrison Township Volunteer Fire Department, Van Buren Township Volunteer Fire Department or the Alzheimer’s Association.
