Club news for week of Oct. 14

Rotary club

The Brown County Rotary Club will meet via Zoom at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15.

The guest speaker will be John Elliott, president and CEO of Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana, which serves more than 300,000 food insecure people in 21 Indiana counties.

Elliott will discuss the challenges and changes necessitated by increased demand for food assistance due to economic contraction, decreased availability of volunteers due to fear of contracting coronavirus and reduced government support.

Elliott has been with Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana for four years. His prior experience includes 10 years with Kroger as a manager in public affairs and media relations; 10 years with Inland Paper in international operations, mergers and acquisitions and project management; and 10 years with the United States State Department in economics and trade policy.

He earned a bachelor of arts in business and Spanish from Hanover College, studied Mandarin at the Foreign Service Institute and earned an MBA from Butler University.

Those interested in exploring opportunities to participate in projects and to be of service to the community are invited to attend the work-from-home session.

The Rotary Club of Brown County recently donated $1,000 to ShelterBox, a Rotary International partner.

ShelterBox manufactures and stocks large plastic boxes with emergency shelter and other sustenance equipment such as solar lights, water filters, cooking utensils and tools, and utilizes volunteers to deploy the boxes to families experiencing homelessness due to natural disasters or humanitarian crises.

The organization was started 20 years ago by a Rotary club in Cornwall, England. Since its inception, the organization has sheltered more than 1.6 million people in more than 100 countries around the world. For more information about ShelterBox, visit shelterboxusa.org.

The local club matched a $500 grant from Rotary District 6580, which encompasses 32 clubs in southern Indiana. This donation designates Rotary Club of Brown County as a bronze-level Hero Club.
