YMCA to host lifeguard course

The Brown County YMCA, 105 Willow St., will host a lifeguard training course on Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 28 and 29, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A final test will be administered on Friday, Dec. 30.

The course includes certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, providing successful completion of the written and physical-skills tests.

Candidates must be responsible, reliable, able to perform under pressure, able to swim 300 yards continuously, at least 15 years of age and have reliable transportation.

Online training is completed before skills on Wednesday, Dec. 28. This portion of the course will take approximately 12 hours.

The cost is $75 per registrants and includes instruction and materials. The deadline to register is Friday, Dec. 23.

Hard Truth hosting outdoor races

The 2023 Frosty Trails extreme trail races will take runners on the rugged grounds of the Hard Truth forest on Saturday, Jan. 14, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m..

Runners will meet steep hills, creek crossings and more on the Hard Truth Distilling Co. campus, 418 Old State Road 46.

There will be an after party with a complimentary chili bar and live music. Every participant will get a drink ticket good for one Quaff ON! beer, a shot for a warm drink or non-alcoholic beverage.

Participants under 18 who sign up by Jan. 1 will get $5 off

  • Frosty 5K: Registration until Saturday Dec. 31 is $30 and $35 from Sunday, Jan. 1 to Friday, Jan. 13.
  • Frosty 10K: Registration until Saturday Dec. 31 is $35 and $40 from Sunday, Jan. 1 to Friday, Jan. 13.
  • Frosty 20K: : Registration until Saturday Dec. 31 is $70 and $80 from Sunday, Jan. 1 to Friday, Jan. 13. Cost is per team.

The Shot Mile is for participants 21 and older. Registration ends Wednesday, Jan. 11 and is $15.

Migratory bird seasons ongoing

The migratory bird hunting seasons for 2022 and early 2023 have been announced by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Mourning dove: Dec. 17 to Jan. 2.

Ducks, coots and mergansers: Nov. 26 to Jan. 22.

Geese (Canada, brant, white-fronted, snow, ross’s): Nov. 26 to Feb. 12.

Classes slated at Brown County YMCA

The Brown County YMCA, 105 Willow St., continues to host classes and sessions.

Homeschool Swim and Gym will occur every Tuesday from 9 to 11 a.m. Activities are open to children grades kindergarten through six.

The cost per session is $30 per child and $25 per each additional sibling for members and $40 per child and $35 per each additional sibling for non-members.

The Y continues to offer open gym for basketball and pickleball for players 16 and older of all ability levels with informal, friendly games.

Core Conditioning is also available on Wednesdays on Zoom or in-person.

Basketball is offered from 5:30 to 6:30 a.m. Monday through Friday, and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Pickleball is 5:30 to 10 a.m. and 12:30 to 3 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; 5:30 to 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; 7 to 9 a.m. on Saturdays; and for beginners on Fridays from 3 to 5 p.m.

Intense Aqua meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Yoga meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Silver Sneakers Yoga meets from 10 to 11 a.m. Laughter Yoga meets from 11:30 a.m. to noon. Power Yoga meets on Mondays from 11 a.m. to noon and Wednesdays from 4 to 5 p.m. Water Yoga meets on Mondays from 9 to 10 a.m. and Wednesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Intro to Yoga meets Mondays from 11 a.m. to noon.

H.I.I.T/Tabata meets on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6 and 8:15 a.m.

A mobility class meets on Saturdays at 9 a.m.

The cost per session is $90 for members and $110 for non-members. Equipment is required. The instructor will rent all equipment for $20 per session.

Open gym hours are free for Y members and $3 per non-member. Open gym occurs at varying times between 8 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Weekend hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The open gym schedule can be found at www.browncountyymca.org.

A flex pass is also available for $72 and can be used to take 12 of any of the classes.

The Brown County YMCA is also offering Hot/Cold Steam Yoga and Water Yoga.
