Summer day camp offered at intermediate school
Brown County Parks and Recreation will provide summer day camp at Brown County Intermediate School, 260 Schoolhouse Lane, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, through Aug. 5, holidays excluded. Children entering preschool through the sixth grade are welcome.
Activities include swimming, bowling, movies, crafts, games and field trips.

Summer reading club events planned at library
Summer reading events at the Brown County Public Library in Nashville take place at 1:30 p.m. Thursdays, June 9, 16, 23, 30 and July 7 and 14.
At the Cordry-Sweetwater branch, the events are at 2:30 p.m. Tuesdays, June 7, 14, 21, 28 and July 5 and 12.
Other summer sessions at the Nashville branch Wednesdays, June 8 through July 13, include children’s programs:
- 2 p.m. — Be the Book, for 11 and younger, reading aloud from favorite stories and creating productions, minus the stage and props.
- 3 p.m. — LEGO Club, for 12 and younger, for an hour of creative free-play building.
Thrive Alliance to have open house at YMCA
To celebrate Older Americans Month, Thrive Alliance will have an open house from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 31 at the Brown County YMCA, 105 Willow St.
It will include a raffle, trail walk, refreshments, information on programs and community resources and the presentation of the Trailblazer Award.

Special blood drive in memory of Jim Wooten
Parkview Church of the Nazarene, 1750 State Road 46 East, will host an American Red Cross blood drive from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, in memory of Jim Wooten, lifetime resident of Brown County.
This is the seventh annual blood drive to remember Wooten, whose life was extended with blood donations as he battled non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Farmers market to feature live music, poultry
BEAN BLOSSOM — From 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 3, the Bean Blossom farmers market, in the St. David’s Episcopal Church parking lot at state roads 45 and 135 North, will host guitarist and singer Joe Persinger performing ’60s and ’70s music.
The featured vendor will be Ed Kacena with free range chicken, duck and turkey eggs, produce, plants and more.
The YMCA and Access Brown County will be featured in the community outreach booth.

A car wash to raise money for Bantam football players and cheerleaders will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 4 in the Brown County IGA parking lot, 30 Hawthorne Drive.
Fruitdale firefighters plan fish fries
BEAN BLOSSOM — The Fruitdale Volunteer Fire Department will have its next fish fry and bazaar from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, June 4 at the station, 5200 State Road 135 North.
In addition to Alaskan pollock fish, volunteers serve “tenderloin sandwiches as big as your head,” desserts, baked beans, coleslaw and sweet tea. Donations are accepted to support the fire department.
A bazaar with vendors of various items will be set up at the station for diners to shop.
Historic site to host studio centennial party
BELMONT — The public is invited to a birthday party celebrating 100 years of T.C. Steele’s Large Studio at the T.C. Steele State Historic Site, 4220 T.C. Steele Road, from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 4.
The party will include an original story at noon about T.C. Steele by Lou Ann Homan from Storytelling Arts of Indiana.
From 1 to 2 p.m., cake and ice cream will be served.
At 2 p.m., Rachel Berenson Perry will speak about her contribution to the book “The House of the Singing Winds.” A book signing will follow.
At 3:30 p.m., cast members of “The Breeze Bends the Grass,” Amanda Biggs and Krista Detor, will perform. The show will be staged Oct. 13-15 and 20-22, at the Brown County Playhouse downtown.

Cottonwood Church hosts VBS in June
JACKSON TWP. — Children in kindergarten through the sixth grades are invited to participate in “Cave Quest” vacation Bible school from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 5 to Thursday, June 9, at Cottonwood Church, 2523 W. Cottonwood Road.
The event features Bible-learning activities, team-building games, “God sightings,” Bible adventures, testing science machines to take home and other activities. Family members and friends are encouraged to join in daily at 7:45 p.m. for the nightly “fanfare finale.” A family picnic is planned Thursday.

VBS slated for June 6 at Parkview church
Parkview Church of the Nazarene, across from Brown County State Park on State Road 46 East, will host vacation Bible school from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, June 6 to 10.
Open to all children through sixth grade, the theme is “Cave Quest: Following Jesus the Light of the World.”

Food manager certification class offered
Beginning at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, June 7 and 8, a food manager certification class will be taught in the second-floor Salmon Room of the County Office Building, 201 N. Locust Lane. The Tuesday session will end at 12:30 p.m. and the Wednesday session will finish at 2:30 p.m.
All businesses serving food, except nonprofits, are required to have a certified food manager on staff. Certification is good for five years.
The class costs $125, which includes the book and test. The book should be picked up at the health department to study in advance. To take the test only, the cost is $50.

Anti-bullying presentation planned
A program providing information about bullying prevention will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, at the Brown County High School cafeteria, 235 Schoolhouse Lane.
The event will feature BCHS graduate and morning show host for RadioNOW 100.9 in Indianapolis, Rachel Bogle, speaking from 5:30 to 6 p.m.
Information booths on suicide prevention, cyberbullying, LGBT youth, school policy and how to report bullying in the school system will be included by Valle Vista, Bloomington Meadows, Centerstone and Community Resources. Refreshments will be served.
Children’s history program to be taught monthly
This summer and fall, the Brown County Historical Society will offer Hands on History to show children ages 8 to 12 what pioneer children would have experienced.
Topics include cooking; gardening; leisure activities such as games, music and dance; home crafts of quilting, weaving and spinning; weather lore and map reading.
Program dates are Thursdays, June 9, July 7, Sept. 22 and Oct. 20, and Saturday, Aug. 20. All are from 1 to 4 p.m. at the History Center and Pioneer Village, 90 E. Gould St.

Class series on native plant stewardship offered
A series about benefits of native plants and controlling non-native plants will be taught this summer at the Brown County Soil & Water Conservation District Office, 802 Memorial Drive at the fairgrounds.
Class will run from 5:30 to 7 p.m. every other Wednesday, June 29 through Aug. 24. Most will be indoors. The July 13 and Aug. 10 sessions will be at Deer Run Park.
Speakers will include Tommy Gunn, Chris Neggers and Ellen Jacquart, all of The Nature Conservancy; Jane Savage and Ruth Ann Ingraham of the Brown County Native Woodlands Project; Allison Rubeck of BCSWCD; Sam Shoaf and Matt Fox of Eco Logic; and Dan McGuckin of Habitat Solutions Wildlife & Forest Management.
Similar in structure to IDNR’s Master Naturalist and Purdue’s Master Gardener programs, those who attend five of six sessions and pass a written, take-home exam will be certified as Native Plant Stewards and can become members of the Brown County Native Woodlands Project.
Graduation will be Saturday, Sept. 10 at Nature Daze.
