Daren Redman to speak at Art Alliance meeting

Art Alliance Brown County will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 2, in Room B of the Brown County Public Library. Officers will be elected. Member Daren Redman will present slides and talk about her recent artist-in-residency at the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

Free music series planned at Village Green

Free outdoor concerts will be given at the Village Green Pavilion this summer and early fall.

The Pavilion Summer Music Series will take place from 4:30 to 6 p.m. one Saturday per month to Oct. 8. It is sponsored by the Johnson Family, Brown County Community Foundation and Arts Village Brown County.

Guests are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets.

Gallery to host photography exhibition

B3 Gallery, 61 W. Main St. in the Village Green building, will present photography by Max and Shirley Lance through June 7.

Brown County residents, the Lances share a love of photography and spend much of their free time driving the back roads in search of subject matter. Max is drawn to street photography and old buildings, while Shirley loves photographing wildlife and flowers.

Their current exhibit will focus on Yellowwood State Forest.

Painting events planned for Arts in the Park

Anabel Hopkins, a public art grant recipient through the Arts in the Park program, will conduct painting demonstrations in Brown County State Park on select dates through Nov. 5.

During most events, Hopkins will paint en plein air. All are welcome to observe.

She may paint on other occasions, including ventures into the woods away from parking areas.

Events, weather permitting, will last two to three hours. Signs at park entrances will include directions to the day’s event.

Photograph entries sought for Cinefest show

In conjunction with the Arts Village Cinefest, a juried show of black-and-white photography will hang during June at the Brown County Playhouse, 70 S. Van Buren Street.

A maximum of three entries per person, with no restriction on subject matter, are allowed with no entry fee. A People’s Choice award will be given.

The weekend of June 17 and 18, Cinefest will include historical films on early Brown County artists, a film about Frank Hohenberger and a video presentation of black-and-white photographs by Indiana University graduate Jerry Ueslmann.

Video workshop for smart phones and apps during Cinefest

Learn how to take “snazzy” videos with your smart phone. Local photographer Tom Preston, who specializes in photos and videos using smart phones and apps, will lead a workshop at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 18, at the Brown County Playhouse, as part of Arts Village Cinefest, for $5 cash at the door. All ages and levels of experience welcome. Those who want to show their videos will have their time on the big screen later in the afternoon.

Art Alliance monthly PARTake classes set

Art Alliance Brown County’s workshops, PARTake Brown County, allow locals and visitors to learn art techniques.

Classes, taught at Chateau Thomas Winery, 225 S. Van Buren St., are informal and designed for beginners.

The class size is limited to 10; registration is recommended. The cost is $35 for Art Alliance members and $40 for nonmembers and includes a glass of wine, all materials, light refreshments and individual instruction.

Arts in the Park artist to paint rare flora

As part of the Indiana Arts in the Park grant, Patricia Rhoden Bartels will host public painting demonstrations at Brown County State Park. Her painting will focus on rare, threatened and endangered flora.

Signs will be posted to direct viewers to the locations.

Projected dates may vary two weeks earlier or later, depending on the weather.

Working with Jen Day, art teacher for the gifted/talented program, Rhoden-Bartels also will sponsor a youth poster contest for endangered/ threatened species at Brown County Junior High School.

An Arts in the Parks art show will take place Saturday, Nov. 5, on the back porch of Abe Martin Lodge.

Musician to perform for Arts in the Park

Arts in the Park grant recipient Craig Brenner will perform on keyboard at Brown County State Park and four other parks and natural areas this summer and fall. Some will include guitarist Gordon Bonham or a full band.

Percussion instruments will be provided for young folks to play along. Each performance will include information about the history of the park and about Hoosier composers and musicians.

The local performance will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 2 at the Brown County State Park Nature Center Amphitheater.

In cases of inclement weather, performances will be moved indoors or rescheduled.

Two-day plein air painting workshops planned

Bloomington artist Troy Kilgore will conduct plein air painting workshops at the Brown County Art Gallery, 1 Artist Drive, in July and August.

Classes are for artists of all skill levels who want to improve their outdoor painting skills. They will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, July 9 and 10, and Friday and Saturday, Aug. 26 and 27.

Kilgore has been painting “en plein air” for 12 years. Each day will begin with a talk and demo, then class will move into the field to paint. Kilgore will focus on values, editing, how to “see” and strategies for better starts, simplification, atmospheric perspective, color, design and composition.

Blues society accepting entries for challenge

BLOOMINGTON — The South Central Indiana Blues Society is accepting entries for its inaugural blues challenge Sunday, Aug. 21. It’s a judged musical competition for band and solo/duo acts and will be at The Players Pub, 424 S. Walnut St.

Visit sciblues.org for rules and entry forms. The entry deadline is Sunday, Aug. 7.

At stake are cash prizes and the opportunity to represent the SCI Blues Society at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee, in January 2017.

The society also will be appointing representatives in “Youth Group” and “Best Self-produced CD” categories.
