Guitar ensemble concert at The Playhouse
A new musical composition by Paul Mortilla, “The Liars Bench,” based on the site Brown County locals gathered to spin tall tales, will premiere at a concert this month at the Brown County Playhouse.
Twelve guitarists from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28 at the Playhouse. They’ll also play a variety of traditional and non-traditional instruments and other original works.
Petar Jankovic, guitar virtuoso with the Jacobs School of Music faculty, will be a featured guest.
Tickets cost $12 per adult or $5 per student.
Free community guitar workshops will be conducted before the concert.

Hoosier artists can apply for state grants
The Indiana Arts Commission has grant money available for artists interested in career development.
Artists have until Friday, Feb. 3 to apply for Individual Artist Program grants at a maximum of $2,000.
Eligible disciplines for this cycle include dance, literary arts, music, theater and folk arts. Applications will be reviewed in April and grants announced in June. Grant recipients will need to complete their projects between July 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018 and submit a grant report.
Draft reviews by IAC staff are available to first-time applicants for general feedback and suggestions. Review requests must be received by Friday, Jan. 20.

Art guild hosts annual patron, senior shows
The Brown County Art Guild, 48 S. Van Buren St., will have its annual patron and senior exhibits in January.
Exhibits are open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through Jan. 28, and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays through Jan. 29. They include a variety of styles and media by non-guild members. All work is available for purchase.
Awards will be given at a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28. Ten awards will be given for both shows in the following categories: Best of Show, $150; first place, $125; second place, $100; third place, $75; and honorable mention, $50. Visitors are asked to vote in the People’s Choice category for both exhibits.
The exhibits are free and open to the public. Patrons include artists ages 18 to 54; senior artists are 55 and older.

Expanded offerings from Women Writing for a Change
BLOOMINGTON — Women Writing for a Change Bloomington, now a nonprofit organization, is expanding its offerings of writing circles and workshops for winter and spring.
A new circle, Telling The Truth, focuses on the art of personal narrative. It is a semester-long writing circle for women with three 13-week options available. Other program offerings at 4638 E. State Road 45 include: Soul Collage, Words & Silence (coed offering), The Empty Nest (coed offering), Loving a Changing Earth, Writers in the Woods, How Many Words is a Picture Worth (coed offering), Project Circle, Moon Circle (quarterly) and Grandmother Circle.
Other programs planned include some for girls in the fourth through 12th grades and for home-schoolers.
A class preview, for $25, will be offered from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18.

Three workshops planned at art gallery
Three workshops featuring three artists will be conducted monthly in the Art Education Studio at the Brown County Art Gallery, 1 Artist Drive, through March.
Each requires participants to bring their own supplies.
Still Life with Wayne Campbell is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 21 and 22. The workshop, $150, focuses on oils. Campbell is president of the Brown County Artists Association.
From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 25, Jeanne McLeish will conduct a $60 class that includes any medium.
All Color Media, led by Wyatt LeGrand from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 4, costs $125.

Photo club exhibiting work at winery
Work by members of the Brown County Photography Club will be on exhibit at Chateau Thomas Winery during regular hours through Tuesday, Feb. 28. The show will be changed during its run, so multiple visits are encouraged.
The show will feature a variety of photographic styles from established and emerging artists including Norberto Nunes, Sharon Bussert, Jessica Bussert, Max Lance, Shirley Lance, Gail Hyde, Tyria McKain, Dan Troglin, Dick Haggard, Tony Cecere, Bobbie Walker and John Walker.
Framed and matted photographs will be offered for sale. Matted photos will be in the lobby to the left of the main music venue.
The photo club is open to photographers of all skill levels. The group meets at 7 p.m. on second Tuesdays in lower-level Room B of the Brown County Public Library. Visitors are welcome. State parks are subject of art show
A show to celebrate Indiana’s State Parks, “The Nature of Art: Painted Parks,” will be on display at Brown County Art Gallery, 1 Artist Drive, through January.
Art association artist Rick Wilson spent several years painting Indiana’s state parks, creating a body of 70 works. The exhibit is traveling Indiana and will be at this gallery for two months. Paintings are for sale and will be released to the owners in March when the tour ends.
The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays.

B3 Gallery, in a new location at 61 W. Main St., is seeking additional Hoosier artwork to display.
All varieties of 3-D work are sought, as well as 2-D space for artists not currently affiliated with a local gallery.
Studio space also is available for artists who need a dedicated space to work, to give demonstrations or classes and to display their work.
