The Brown County School Board of Trustees approved the following Feb. 2:

  • The 2017 track proposal for expansion of coaching staff including two head coaches at the intermediate and junior high levels; an assistant coach at the intermediate and junior high levels; and one high school assistant coach.
  • Appointing Kim Sechler to the Brown County Library Board.
  • Requiring Brown County High School freshmen to take the recently approved Prep for College and Careers course.
  • The 2017 budget for the Brown County Career Resource Center. The approved budget includes a .75 cent per hour raise for support staff; a $3,500 appropriation to purchase new chairs; reducing the technology budget to accommodate chair purchases; and reducing textbook expenditures because the CRC is no longer doing textbook rentals and will have students purchase books instead. The 2017 budget also includes a decrease in adult education revenue — from the estimated $56,800 revenue in the 2016 budget to $52,400 expected for 2017 — because of changes to the way funds will be appropriated to the states by the federal government for adult education, Director Dave Bartlett said at a Jan. 19 board meeting. Indiana is changing the formula for adult education funding to be based on demographic information, such as the number of jobs available in the community, instead of performance. “We’re going on a conservative basis based on what past allocations have been. It’s a pretty big change,” Bartlett said.
  • Brown County Junior High School to pursue a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics certification initiative. Administrators and teachers at the junior high will now pursue a STEM certification through the Indiana Department of Education for the school, which would make BCJHS one of eight middle schools in Indiana to be STEM certified.
  • Emergency pay to bus contractors for the emergency release day and emergency closing day at Sprunica Elementary School for transportation.
