The Miller family now has two Volunteer of the Year awards from Brown County Habitat for Humanity.

Ian Miller was chosen as the winner for 2017. His father, Doug Miller, won the award in 2006.

Both Millers are partners in a concrete business, Millbuild. Ian has helped to develop a new branch of that company, Incounter, focusing on the use of concrete for countertops. Examples can be found at Big Woods Brewery.

Father and son have worked on many Habitat homes, and that experience taught Ian how to work with a crew and delegate jobs, Habitat leaders reported.

A graduate of Brown County High School, Ian received his degree in outdoor recreation management from Ball State University, a course of study inspired by family trips across country during his childhood.

After two years working in park systems in Indiana and Colorado, he joined the Peace Corps. He was assigned to Vanuatu in the South Pacific where he worked with local people to develop better plans for agriculture and utilize their native skills to better provide for themselves.

The honorary title of Volunteer of the Year is an effort by members and the board of directors to acknowledge one of many who have helped build affordable homes that give partner families hope for the future.

The group also hopes to encourage others in the community to participate in the building of Habitat homes.
