Members of a local Old West shooting group brought home awards from a national competition in Evansville this month.

Scarlet Mask Vigilance Society members Rick Followell, Kay Followell, Larry Gardner and Jim Kakavecos competed in the National Congress of Old West Shootists contest. Winners were:

Kay Followell

• First place, four-gun smokeless for women, main match;
• First place, long-range-style big boar smokeless;
• Third place, long-range pistol-caliber smokeless

Rick Followell

• First place, four-gun smokeless main match;
• Second place, long-range single-shot smokeless;
• Third place, long-range pistol-caliber smokeless

Larry Gardner

• First place, long-range pistol-caliber lever-action black powder;
• First place, long-range big boar rifle-caliber smokeless powder;
• Second place, main match pistolier, black powder and cap-and-ball pistols, rifle and shotgun

The Scarlet Mask Vigilance Society is named after vigilantes who likely captured and lynched members of the Indiana-based outlaw band known as the Reno gang in 1868.

Club members, dressed like lawmen, bandits, gamblers and all manner of cowboys, meet regularly to practice their skills — all wearing a bright red bandanna, the “scarlet mask.”
