Brown County pottery on special exhibit at gallery
An exhibit of early Brown County pottery and paintings from the Richmond Art Museum opens at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 8 at the Brown County Art Gallery.
The exhibit features work from three early Brown County potteries: Brown County Pottery, Brown County Hills Pottery, Karl Martz and Becky Brown. More than 100 pieces of pottery will go on display, loaned from private collections, and about 70 pieces will be for sale.
Brown County Pottery opened in the 1930s. Many local people worked at the business, which grew into one of the largest in the country during its 20 years of operation. One young apprentice was Karl Martz. He and wife, Becky Brown, would eventually open their own pottery business in Nashville. Martz went on to start the ceramics department at Indiana University. Another employee, Claude Graham, worked with Brown County Pottery until it closed in the early ’50s. He partnered with Carolyn Ondreicka to open Brown County Hills Pottery, which operated during the ’60s.
On loan from the Richmond Art Museum, a collection of paintings also will be on display. The RAM, east of Indianapolis by the Ohio border, is currently closed for renovations.
The opening on July 8 includes a $10 admission fee for featured events that day only. At 2 p.m., pottery collector Rick Kelley will present a full history of the early potteries in the Art Education Studio. Local potter Susy O’Donnell will demonstrate tile painting. Wine and appetizers will be served afterward.
The exhibit opens free of charge from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 9 and runs through July 30. Monday through Saturday, the gallery at 1 Artist Drive is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

J.A. Burst of Columbus and Linda Gredy of Dayton, Ohio, are the featured artists at the Brown County Art Guild during July.
An artist reception will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 8 at 48 S. Van Buren St.
Gredy will give a demonstration from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 15 at the guild.
Burst studied at Butler University, John Herron Art Institute, and with Indiana watercolor artists Rob O’Dell, Peggy Brown and Jerry Smith. She became a member of the guild in 2011. “I resist the encroachment of technology, Burst says. She wonders how anyone can “enjoy the pleasure of dancing shadows, the weathered face of a building, reflection on water and the serenity of the landscape” when staring at a screen.
Gredy’s years of experience and a degree in graphic design, coupled with illustration experience and a bachelor’s degree in fine arts, provide a foundation for her love and pursuit of painting. She became a member of the guild in 2016. “I am fascinated with light and its wonderful influence on everything it touches,” Gredy says. “It’s my desire that my art will bring joy, inspire hope and encourage … as I seek to reflect the glory of creation.”
Photography on exhibit at B3 Gallery in July
B3 Gallery will exhibit photography by Samuel Schlagel from Thursday, July 6 through Tuesday, Aug. 8.
An artist’s reception will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 8.
Schlagel, of Middletown, has photographed places across the United States, the Caribbean and Central America. He works primarily in black and white. This is his first gallery exhibition.

Plein air workshop planned at state historic site
BELMONT — Watercolor artist Betty Wagoner will teach a workshop outdoors at T.C. Steele State Historic Site from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 8.
For adults and mature teens, the program is free with standard admission, which is $7 per adult, $6 per senior, or $4 per child age 3 to 17. Supplies are provided and registration is required. Call 812-988-2785.
Impressionistic painting workshop set for July
Two award-winning painters, Patricia Rhoden Bartels and Kathy Blankenheim, will teach “secrets of painting like an Indiana master” over three days in July.
Participants will learn basic design, color theory and painting techniques, with an emphasis on the history of impressionism in Indiana art. The workshop is suitable for beginner and experienced painters of any age.
It will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 12 to Friday, July 14 at the Brown County Art Gallery on Artist Drive. The cost is $300.

Make jewelry at state park Nature Center
Artist-in-residence Amy Greely will lead a jewelry-making workshop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 15 at Brown County State Park’s Nature Center.
Part of an Arts in the Parks grant, the workshops include a 10 a.m. hike to explore the understory of the forest floor to provide inspiration.
Weave-in, spin-in planned monthly at library
Weavers and spinners of all skill levels can bring looms, spindles and wheels to the Brown County Public Library from 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays, July 15 and Aug. 19.
Weaving and spinning experts and beginners are welcome to ask questions and to share projects and ideas at the free events for teens and adults. No registration is needed.

Local artist to demonstrate techniques at state beaches
Nashville oil painter Charlene Marsh will demonstrate her plein air, palette knife painting techniques at two state recreation areas this summer for Arts in the Parks projects.
From 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 15, Marsh will paint and take questions from the public at Starve Hollow State Recreation Area swimming beach, 4345 South County Road 275 West.
From 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, Marsh will demonstrate techniques at the Monroe Lake Paynetown State Recreation Area swimming beach, 485 State Road 446 South in Bloomington. Both events go on rain or shine.

Back Roads of Brown County tours scheduled
From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily during October, 24 artists will open their studios to the public in 15 locations around Brown County.
Visitors can meet artists, watch them work, explore their studios and buy a variety of handmade work directly from artists.
