Kids on Wheels are on a roll
A group of teens and adults may have secured a large donation that would help them buy property for a skate park.
Kids on Wheels has been working for the past year to create a safe place for local teens to gather that is easily accessible from downtown Nashville and the schools campus.
Juvenile probation officer Brenda Dewees, who has been volunteering with the group, said she is talking with one specific donor about a possible donation that would be a “big chunk” of what the group needs to be able to buy land.
The group also is working to raise $10,000 to get a matching grant through the Brown County Community Foundation. That money would help build elements in the park. Current plans include a skateboarding area, amphitheater with fire pit and movie screen, hammock swings, picnic tables with cellphone charging stations, a restroom, and a pit to play gaga — a dodgeball-type game.

“I think once people know we’ve got property and we’ve set up accounts through the community foundation, and that sort of thing, I feel people will be more likely to believe it’s going to happen,” Dewees said.
Kids on Wheels was to meet July 10 at the BETA teen center to discuss the donation and possible land options. One set of land owners has responded; see their letter on Page A5.

County road paving still going on
Some paving was done on Salt Creek Road last week, but it’s not finished yet, said Brown County Highway Superintendent Mike Magner.
Salt Creek — one of the major county routes that’s getting work this summer through a state grant — was in such bad shape that the work crew had to do significant road leveling before it could do the actual paving, Magner said.
“That is not the finished product,” he said. The paving crew will come back and lay a final surface, but he’s not sure yet when that will be.
No firm dates have been set for repaving Valley Branch, Mount Liberty or Carmel Ridge roads, either, but Carmel Ridge could begin sometime this week, he said. That will conclude paving plans in the northwest corner of the county.
In preparation for Valley Branch paving, the water company dug out a spot where a water line had been leaking and rebuilt that part of the road, he said. When paving contractor Milestone sets a date, the plan is to do Valley Branch and Mt. Liberty at the same time, he said.
