Brown County High School will have a new but familiar face in the assistant principal’s office on the first day of school, Aug. 9.

On Aug. 3, the Brown County School Board of Trustees approved the transfer of high school English teacher Charles Hutchins to take over as assistant principal effective July 28.

Hutchins replaced Angie Evans, who had held the job since the fall of 2012. Prior to that, she was a teacher at the former Nashville Elementary School.

Evans took a job as principal at Lakeview Elementary School in Monroe County.

“We’re so proud of her,” Superintendent Laura Hammack said. “She’s thrilled and we miss her desperately, but this was a great thing for her and her family. She has wanted to be a principal for a long time.”

The 2017-18 school year would have marked Hutchins’ 18th year of teaching. He’s also been coaching high school boys basketball since he was hired into the district in the spring of 2014.

This is his first year as an administrator.

“I’m really excited for the change, just to get to approach the school day in a different way,” he said.

The school board also approved the transfer of Christy Wrightsman from Van Buren Elementary School principal to Brown County Schools District Readiness Coordinator.

District Readiness Coordinator is a new job funded with a grant from the Lilly Endowment Inc.’s Regional Opportunities Initiative, or ROI. Wrightsman will be responsible for better aligning the school curriculum and programs with the needs of the area’s workforce.

Hammack said a new principal at Van Buren Elementary School will take over Aug. 14, but who that person will be hasn’t been decided.

The search process began Aug. 4 with two meetings, one for teachers and staff and one for parents. Interviews are expected to happen this week.
