The Brown County School Board of Trustees approved the following Feb. 1:

  • The retirement notice of Brown County Schools Director of Student Services Alan Kosinski, effective June 30.
  • New Brown County Junior High School course proposals of Music Technology and STEM (Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) lab. Both will be open to students in seventh and eighth grades. Music Technology will focus on digital audio, sequencing audio and notation software. It was made possible through financial support from the Howard Hughes Foundation. The STEM lab will be in addition to regular science and math classes.
  • A change in the 2017-18 school calendar to indicate Presidents Day on Feb. 19 as a snow make-up day.
  • Awarding a paid holiday to support staff who work 180 to 230 days for the first day of spring break March 12. This is because Presidents Day, which is the paid holiday support staff usually get, will be a regular school day.
  • Brown County High School course guide additions: Graphic Design and Layout 5550, Computer Illustration and Graphics 4516, Computer Science II; Special Topics 5252, Computer Science II: Programming 5236, Eagle Manufacturing, Calculus BC, Indiana Studies 1518 and Career Information and Exploration 0522. Not all courses will be offered next year, Principal Shane Killinger said. Some will be required as part of Eagle Manufacturing, but the school administration is not sure yet which one will be used first, so they were being “proactive” by having all courses approved at once, Killinger said.
  • A maternity leave notice for Becky Higgins from about April 7 to May 21.
  • A request from BCJHS teachers Mike Harman and Ryan Wilcoxen for a History of Sports Class field trip to the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory on March 6 in Louisville, Kentucky.
  • Appointing BCHS track assistant varsity girls coach Richard Gist, $1,535, effective Feb. 12.
  • Appointing BCHS assistant track coach Chasity Smith, $1,278 stipend, effective March 5. She is a replacement for Jake Koressel.
  • Appointing Sprunica Elementary School paraprofessional Gracie “Nikki” Morgan, full time with benefits, $10.25 per hour, effective Feb. 2. She is a replacement for Makenzie Lynch.
  • Transferring BCHS custodian Thomas Bartlett from part time to full time, effective Jan. 23. He is a replacement for William Franklin.
  • Transferring BCJHS cafeteria worker Amanda Lasley to SES cafeteria worker, part time without benefits. This is a new position.
  • Transferring BCJHS cafeteria worker Jenifer Terry from two days per week to three days per week, part time without benefits. She is a replacement for Jessica Oden.
