Letter: Thanks to all who helped with Touch-a-Truck

To the editor:

Our first Touch-a-Truck event attracted kids of all ages on a hot Saturday in June. There were 32 folks who came with their vehicles and 33 volunteers who assisted in the effort: a total of 65 people who gave up their Saturday to make sure this event was a success. And it was indeed!

We counted more than 500 people who came through, and received donations of more than $1,000. Add to that the monies given by our sponsors (PNC Bank, Kelley Rentals, C & C Equipment and Jackson Connect), we cleared more than $3,000 — all to be used to provide weekend food for hungry kids in Brown County.

In addition to the monetary donations, a special thanks to the incredible support of Dr. Hammack, Jason, Tom, Jim, Roger and David from Brown County Schools; Kim at the Brown County YMCA; the Brown County Literacy Coalition; Big Woods, which donated 27 pizzas for our hungry volunteers; Boy Scout Troop 190, which provided food and much-needed snow-cones; the Masons, who were there with the CHIP program; and Brown County’s own “Cat in the Hat,” Bob Gustin, who wowed the kids and parents with a fun telling of his famous story.

Our thanks wouldn’t be complete without special mention of those who brought their vehicles: Access Brown County; the Brown County Highway Department; Brown County Sheriff, Bender Lumber; C & C Equipment; CRH Ambulance; Cummins; Fruitdale, Hamblen, Jackson, Nashville and Southern Brown volunteer fire departments; JAM Excavating Services; Jerry Fleetwood Excavating; Nashville Police; Shelby Materials; Jason Kirchhofer; Joe Ridenour; John Main; Bill and Linda Todd; Morgan County Traveling Garden; Rita Simon and Tony Krug.

A big thanks to those who braved the heat and brought their children and grandchildren. You made it a special day for all of us. Thank you!

Gloria Berryman, for Brown County Weekend Backpacks
