BRIGHT SPOT: ‘Hope rocks’ in Brown County

If you see a rock with a Minion or Minnie Mouse ears on it, pick it up. Snap a photo. Share where you found it, and then hide it again to brighten someone else’s day.

That’s what 4-year-old Easton Murphy and his mom, Victoria Norman, hope people will do. They’re hiding these bright-colored rocks throughout Nashville.

“A lot of times, everyone is on the hustle and bustle, just to try to get to work, or they have their day so packed, a lot of people will just walk for a break in town if they work (here),” Norman said.

“We just hope that these will help somebody have a better day, or just shed some encouragement and a little bit of happiness in our community. That’s what we’re trying to do.”

Murphy and his mom stopped by the Brown County Democrat’s office earlier this month to hide a few special rocks outside.

Murphy opened the Ziploc bag he was carrying. “I mixed the colors together,” he said about a dark rock he was holding.

Norman decided to create BC Hope Rocks as an activity she and her son could do together that didn’t involve work or school.

“We sat down and painted a whole bunch,” Norman said.

“Anybody can do this activity, and it really helps to bring their creative minds out.”

Some rocks feature cartoon characters; others may have Bible verses or be covered in bright colors which 4-year-old Murphy picked.

Norman said other rock-painters are welcome to join them. “They may have more ideas than what we have. Whatever we can do to bring the community closer,” she said.

The mother and son are posting about their project on Facebook at “BC Hope Rocks.”

A post on Oct. 7 reported the two had hidden 47 rocks in Nashville and when they went back through, they were gone.

“We’re hoping that when somebody finds a rock, they will place it somewhere else,” Norman said.
