A Brown County teen told police that he looked at his phone to change a song just before he rear-ended a vehicle on State Road 135 North.

The crash happened just after 5 p.m. Oct. 10 near West Robertson Road, an accident report by Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy William Pool states.

Collin Scales, 17, told Pool he was not paying attention when the crash happened.

The driver of the other vehicle, Deborah Bartes, 61, of Richardson Drive, said she was waiting on 135 North to turn, with her signal on, when her vehicle was hit.

Bartes did not have visible injuries and Pool marked her status “unknown,” but noted that her neck may have been hurt.

A passenger in Bartes’ vehicle, 64-year-old Donna Mefford of Summerfield, Florida, complained of pain in her abdomen and pelvis area, according to the report. It was not noted whether or not she needed to be taken to a hospital

Scales was not injured. Everyone was wearing seat belts. Scales’ vehicle was towed.
