John “Jack” Francis McCann Jr., 89, passed away peacefully Saturday, Dec. 29, 2018, surrounded by loved ones. He was a resident of Nashville.

John was born on March 21, 1929, in Indianapolis to the late John F. and Catherine C. McCann Sr. He grew up on the east side of Indianapolis. He attended Our Lady of Lourdes and graduated from Cathedral High School in Indianapolis. He graduated from St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer and attended Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis, graduating in 1954 with a doctorate in jurisprudence. He enlisted in the Army soon after and was stationed in Germany and worked in the JAG.

After leaving the Army in 1956, he became a trial attorney for the U.S. Veterans Administration in Indianapolis. He also served as deputy prosecutor and city attorney from 1964 to 1967. He served on the Marion County Liquor Board from 1969 to 1971. John maintained a private practice from 1962 to 2017 as McCann & Longaberger, eventually just John F. McCann Jr. He retired Jan. 1, 2018.

He married the love of his life, Mary Louise Cummins, on May 25, 1963; they were married for 55 years.

John was preceded in death by his siblings, Joseph Drury McCann and Rita Ann Sweeney.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Louise; their three children, Mary Catherine Bose (Barry) of Morgantown, John Patrick McCann (Lanie) of Greenwood, and Ann Marie McCann (Todd Baker) of Nashville; four grandchildren, Kevin R. Hall and Jacob D. Hall, both of Brown County, Steven P. McCann and Sean P. McCann, both of Greenwood; and many nieces and nephews.

John “Jack” always loved to call Brown County his home after moving there permanently in 1980. He was quite active in Democratic politics, working the polls and serving as precinct committeemen for Hamblen Township. He served on the Brown County Liquor Board from 2009 to 2018. He was an active and devoted member of St. Agnes Catholic Church as early as 1940 when his parents owned a farm in Bartholomew County, which is now part of Camp Atterbury.

He was an avid fisherman, bowler, golfer, bird watcher and the teller of many stories that delighted his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.

A celebration of life was Jan. 5 at St. Agnes Catholic Church.
