BEAN BLOSSOM — An Indianapolis woman was taken to the hospital after her vehicle collided with a fire engine that was on its way to a house fire.

Alyssa Goddard, 21, told police she had turned left onto State Road 135 North from State Road 45 around 1 a.m. Jan. 19 when she noticed a fire engine driving behind her with their emergency lights activated, an accident report by Nashville Police Officer Justin Anderson states.

Goddard said she could not hear the engine’s sirens, but that she felt like she was being overrun by the fire truck. She drove into the southbound lane, and as she shifted lanes, her vehicle was hit in the rear by the fire engine.

Shawn Fosnight, 27, of Nashville, was driving the engine. He is a first lieutenant with the Brown County (Nashville) Volunteer Fire Department.

After the crash, Fosnight pulled over to check on Goddard before notifying police and EMS and continuing on to the fire, because the water the truck was carrying was needed at the fire scene, he said.

Goddard told Fosnight she thought she was OK and that she would wait for EMS to arrive to check her out, the report states.

Goddard was complaining of pain in her left leg and hip. She was checked out by EMS before being taken to Johnson Memorial Hospital for further treatment, the report states.

Her vehicle was towed.

On Jan. 22, Fosnight provided a written statement to police. He said he was driving north on 135 North responding to the fire call with all emergency lights and sirens activated when he came upon Goddard’s vehicle, which was failing to “observe his presence.”

Fosnight began to pass the vehicle when Goddard swerved at the last moment into his lane of travel. The engine then hit Goddard’s vehicle and pushed it off to the west side of the road, he said.
