Club news for week of Feb. 12

Cemetery society

The Brown County Cemetery Preservation Society, a committee of the Peaceful Valley Heritage group, meets at 4:15 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month in the archives room at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St. The next meeting will be Feb. 12. The public is welcome.

Preservation group

The Peaceful Valley Heritage Inc. preservation group meets the second Tuesday of each month. The next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 12 in the Howard F. Hughes Community Building, 209 N. Van Buren St. All are welcome.

Photography club

The Brown County Photography Club meets from 7 to 9 p.m. the second Tuesday of every month in a lower-level room at the Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane. The next meeting will be Feb. 12. Anyone interested in photography is welcome.

Members of the club currently have photos for sale at the Daily Grind, 114 S. Van Buren St. Photos will be shown on a rotating basis.

Pioneer Women

The Pioneer Women’s Club meets each Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the History Center, 90 E. Gould St. Interested women are welcome.

Rotary club

Kelli Bruner and Debbie Harman will provide an overview of the Brown County Schools preschool program when the Brown County Rotary Club meets for breakfast Thursday, Feb. 14. The meeting will start at 7:15 a.m. at Nashville’s Artists Colony Inn, 105 S. Van Buren St.

Bruner and Harman will describe unmet needs for infant/toddler care in Brown County and how a $100,000 grant from Early Learning Indiana has prepared BCS to earn a Level 3 Paths to Quality designation from the Family and Social Services Administration.

Bruner is the principal of Helmsburg Elementary School, where she has worked for 23 years. She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Indiana University and her master’s degree in general education as well as an administrative license from Indiana Wesleyan. Bruner and her husband, Mark, have lived in Brown County for 18 years. They have two daughters who attended Brown County schools and are now in college.

Harman has worked for 33 years in Brown County schools. She earned a master’s degree in speech and learning sciences from IU. She began her career as a speech-language pathologist serving preschool and school-age students at three Brown County elementary schools and Brown County Junior High School. In 2009, she was asked to join the central office administrative team as director of student learning. Harman manages all federal, state and regional grants as well as pre-K through 12th grade curriculum, assessment and student services programs. She and her husband, Bob, have lived in Bloomington for 32 years. They have a son studying network engineering at Purdue University in West Lafayette.

Members of the community are welcome to attend the club’s meeting.

Genealogy group

The Brown County Genealogical Society meets at 1 p.m. the second Thursday of each month at the Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane.

The next meeting is planned for Feb. 14, which will be a round-table discussion on ships and immigrant ancestors. The Scots-Irish topic has been moved to March 14. Meetings are free and all are welcome.

Lions club

The Brown County Lions Club dinner meets for dinner at 6:30 p.m. third Tuesdays of the month at Parkview Church of the Nazarene.

The club has been serving the community since 1943 and members live by the motto, “We Serve.” Local, statewide, national and worldwide programs include: Leader Dogs for the Blind; speech and hearing needs; vision screening, including working with Brown County Schools; cancer and diabetes programs; college scholarships and more.

Herb society 

The Brown County Herb Society has changed its meeting time from 6:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Meetings are still the third Monday of each month in lower-level Room B at the Brown County Public Library. The next meeting will be Feb. 18. The public is welcome.

WRAPS

The Writers, Readers and Poets Society meets from 7 to 9 p.m. on first and third Thursdays each month to read and discuss the literary compositions of those present. The next meetings will be Feb. 21 and March 7 at the Brown County Public Library, 205 N. Locust Lane. All are welcome.
