Art Alliance Brown County seeks new members
The Art Alliance of Brown County will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28 at Hard Truth Hills, 418 Old State Road 46. Prior to the meeting, the group can tour the facility at 5 p.m. A cash bar and food will be available for purchase.
The alliance is a social networking club focused on encouraging, supporting and growing the arts locally, sharing recent artwork and awards. The group is open to all area artists, including musicians, poets, those in theater, and those who create textiles and two- and three-dimensional art. Meetings are every other month.

Vawter art competition seeks artists to enter
GREENFIELD — The 2019 Will Vawter Art Exhibition is open to Hoosier artists in oil, acrylic and watercolor until Saturday, March 23. The juried art competition will be hosted by the Hancock County Arts Council.
The entry fee is $40 per artist for up to three entries. Registrations must be postmarked by March 23. Artist Larry Rudolech is this year’s juror. Awards range from $100 to $1,000.
The show honors John William Vawter, a noted artist who had a studio in Brown County. Vawter was self-taught; in the early 1920s, he illustrated 11 volumes of poetry by James Whitcomb Riley. Vawter won multiple prizes in the Hoosier Salon and had a one-man show there in 1932. He is included in the book, “The Artists of Brown County,” by Lyn Letsinger-Miller.
A reception and awards ceremony will take place Friday, April 12.

Church seeks more choir members
Nashville United Methodist Church is accepting new choir members. Practices are at 7 p.m. Wednesdays; the choir sings at 10:30 a.m. on Sundays. It does not meet during summer. No experience is necessary.

Blacksmith demonstration, program set at library
A demonstration by blacksmith Jason Nickel and his apprentices will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 9 at the Brown County Public Library. The demonstration will be followed by a program at 2 p.m.
Traditional Arts Indiana will host the events at the library, 205 Locust Lane; they are free and open to the public. Guests can interact with the artisans while learning more about the TAI apprenticeship program, new Indiana Heritage fellowships, and Hoosier traditional arts practices.
Nickel apprenticed with Monroe County blacksmith Jack Brubaker, becoming lead blacksmith in 2007. He has 30 years of experience “transforming lifeless lumps of metal into beautiful works of art or useful tools,” as expressed by his apprentice, Ansaldo Paolo. Nickel’s other apprentice is Iris Nickel.
Photography club celebrates centennial, hosts exhibit
The Daguerre Club of Indiana will celebrate its 100th anniversary with an exhibit starting the second weekend in March at the Brown County Art Gallery.
An opening night gala and reception will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 9 at the gallery, 1 Artist Drive. The event will include music, drinks and hors d’oeuvres. Tickets cost $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Black and white attire is encouraged.
The centennial exhibit will be open to the public March 10 to 30. The display will be anchored by Nancy Bailey-Pratt’s American Society of Photographers Fellowship prints and surrounded by other Daguerre member displays. Other activities will include workshops and a display of “future masters.”
Founded in 1919, the DCI is the longest continuously functioning camera club in America.

Program on local photography in early 20th century
Jon Kay will give a program on the use of glass-plate photography in the 1900s in Brown County at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 10. The program will take place at the Brown County Art Gallery, 1 Artist Drive.
Kay will focus on the work of area photographers Frank Hohenberger, Otto Ping, James Whitaker and Benjamin Wallace Douglass, who captured various aspects of Brown County life in the early 20th century.
Kay, of Brown County, is the director of Traditional Arts Indiana, curator of folklife and cultural heritage at the Mathers Museum of World Cultures, and clinical associate professor of folklore and ethnomusicology at Indiana University.
Admission will be $5 at the door.
Photo contest open for historic preservation subjects
The Indiana Division of Historic Preservation & Archaeology is accepting photos for its annual Historic Preservation Month photo contest. It’s looking for photos of something that has been preserved, is in the process of being preserved, or needs to be preserved.
The subject in the photo must be in Indiana and at least 50 years old. It must show something that was designed and/or built. The contest deadline is April 5.

Popular Victorian tea planned in April
The Brown County Art Gallery will serve its annual Victorian tea Sunday, April 14. The theme is “Entertaining with Silver in the Victorian Era.”
Doors will open at 12:30 p.m. for shopping with vendors. Tea will be served at 2 p.m., followed by the program. The fundraiser for the gallery foundation will include favors, a raffle and door prizes, as well as contests for “best tea attire” and “best hat.”

Local artist will paint with children in April
In celebration of Earth Day, local artist Patricia Rhoden-Bartels will conduct painting demonstrations at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 13 and 14.
On Saturday, Rhoden-Bartels will be set up at a vista at the Brown County State Park Nature Center. On Sunday, she will be at the new Singing Winds Visitor Center at T.C. Steele State Historic Site.
Children ages 5 to 16 can sign up at the state park office to paint along with Rhoden-Bartels at the Nature Center or to interpret a work by art master T.C. Steele at the historic site. Materials will be provided. She will guide up to 15 kids during each painting session. Setup will begin at 1 p.m.; painting will start at 2 p.m.
The state park entrance fee will apply.
The events are part of Arts In The Parks supported by the Indiana Art Council and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
Shared art studio space available in town
B3 Gallery has created a space for artists and the community to come together.
S3, the Nashville “shared studio and maker space” is on the second floor of the gallery at 61 W. Main St. It is a meeting area for artists, craftspeople, inventors, clubs, seminars, classes or individuals.
S3 can provide painting and drawing easels, an alternative process darkroom, macro photography equipment, a digital projector, a glass annealing kiln and burnout kiln, PCB etching equipment and tanks, leaded glass tools, metal forming and casting tools, electronics and robotics fabrication tools, various computer numerical control tools, a scroll saw, band saw, drill press, centrifuge, bench grinder/polisher, laser cutter/engraver, air compressor, vacuum pumps and chemistry vent hood.
The organizers seek “fun, energetic, enthusiastic and creative people to bring life to the space.”
Donations of under-utilized equipment or specialty tools also are being accepted.

Local artist will conduct demonstrations
As part of the Wild Flower Foray celebration, local artist Patricia Rhoden-Bartels will conduct painting demonstrations Saturday and Sunday, April 27 and 28. The demonstrations are part of Arts In The Parks supported by The Indiana Art Council and Indiana DNR.
On Saturday, Rhoden-Bartels will conduct a sunset painting demonstration at 5 p.m. at Brown County State Park’s Hesitation Point. Set-up will begin at 4 p.m. Naturalist David Mow will provide environmental dialog; the park entrance fee will apply.
On Sunday, Rhoden-Bartels will demonstrate plein air painting at 2 p.m. at the T.C. Steele State Historic Site. At 1 p.m., she will set up to paint daffodils or other wildflowers for the demonstration.

The Paint Box art gallery, 92 W. Franklin in Antique Alley, is celebrating its 45th year in Nashville. The gallery, on the corner of Jefferson and Franklin, displays a variety of artwork. Artists interested in displaying their work can contact Manager Sherry Barnett at 812-597-0039.
