School board approves staff changes, retirement notice

The Brown County Schools Board of Trustees approved the following on March 7:

  • The retirement notice for Constance Darling, effective at the conclusion of the 2018-2019 school year. This notice includes a request for VEBA bridge insurance coverage.
  • Separating Brown County Schools custodian Zadie Farley, effective Feb. 26. This is not a termination.
  • Separating BCS bus driver Deborah Johnson, effective Feb. 25. This is not a termination.
  • Separating Brown County Intermediate School sixth-grade volleyball coach Justin Mollo, effective Feb. 22. This is not a termination.
  • Appointing BCIS assistant track coach Alysha Oxendine, $1,278 stipend, effective March 7. She is a replacement for Kady Lane.
  • Appointing Brown County High School assistant track coach Emily Lewellen, $745 split stipend, effective March 7. She is a replacement for Richard Gist. Lewellen’s stipend was split because this is not a full coaching position, as she will continue to serve as assistant track coach for the Brown County Junior High School, Superintendent Laura Hammack said.

Snow days counted, last day of school set

If there are no more snow days between now and May, the last day of school will be Wednesday, May 29.

Superintendent Laura Hammack discussed the updated last day of school at the March 7 Brown County School Board of Trustees meeting at Van Buren Elementary School.

Nov. 15 and Jan. 22 were snow make-up days. The district’s first eLearning day was Jan. 30. ELearning days count as a school day and do not have to be made up.

Two more snow make-up days were used Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, and eLearning day took place Feb. 8.

If another snow day is called, the last day of school would be Thursday, May 30.

School board meeting date moved to next week

Due to spring break, the Brown County Schools Board of Trustees will not meet on March 21.

The board meets the first and third Thursday of each month, but since spring break falls on the third meeting week, the board will now meet on March 28, Superintendent Laura Hammack said.

Spring break is this week, March 18-22.

The March 28 school board meeting will be at the Brown County High School.
