PEOGA — A Brown County man faces multiple felonies after police say he battered a woman, tried to stab her then waved firearms at officers when they arrived to help her remove her belongings from his home on April 20.

The victim called police to report that she had been battered the previous night. She said she was going to 59-year-old Richard Wilson’s home on Peoga Road to get her belongings and medication. Wilson had told the victim he would be “locked and loaded” if she returned and she told police he had multiple firearms in his home, according to a probable cause affidavit by Sgt. Bill Southerland with the Brown County Sheriff’s Department.

Police staged in the area as the victim and a friend went to the home. The friend then came to their location to report that Wilson had tried to stab the victim.

When Southerland and Deputy Jimmy Green arrived at the home, the victim told them Wilson tried to stab her, and before she could provide further details, Wilson stepped onto the home’s porch with a handgun in his right hand, the affidavit states.

He began waving the gun over his head, yelling at the victim. Southerland drew his weapon and ordered Wilson to drop it as the victim was removed from the area. After being ordered multiple times to drop his weapon, Wilson dropped it on the railing in front of him, according to the affidavit.

Green then took control of the gun, which was loaded. Wilson continued to yell obscenities at the victim who was standing at the end of the driveway, claiming she owed him money.

Wilson made several threats that he would shoot anyone who came to his house after this. Southerland calmed Wilson down and reported smelling alcohol on his breath. Wilson became upset again and said if any other officers showed up to his again he would be “locked and loaded,” the affidavit states.

Wilson then moved toward Southerland, pointing his finger at him. When Southerland put his hand up and told him to back up, Wilson smacked his hand away and tried to push Southerland.

While Southerland was trying to place Wilson under arrest, both of them fell off the wet porch. Wilson landed face down and Southerland landed on his knees. Wilson was then placed in handcuffs and checked out by EMS for a head injury before being transported to Johnson Memorial Hospital, the affidavit states.

The victim told police she had injured her left shoulder from the altercation the night before, but she did not have insurance and could not afford to go to the hospital.

On April 23, Southerland reported having to seek treatment for pain in his lower back.

On May 3, Wilson was charged with battery resulting in bodily injury, a Level 5 felony; intimidation, a Level 5 felony; intimidation, a Level 6 felony; and domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor.
