Meet the music center’s new technical director

Matt Kincer

The staff of the Brown County Music Center continues to grow as the grand opening date nears closer in August.

In June, Matt Kincer was hired as the venue’s full-time technical director. Most of Kincer’s work will be behind the scenes as he handles everything from audio gear to lighting.

The Democrat sent Kincer a Q&A to introduce him to the community.

Q: Tell us about yourself. Where are you from?

A: I was born in Columbus, Indiana, and raised in Lafayette. I spent several years in Orlando, Florida, New York and Las Vegas.

Q: What are your interests?

A: Boating; spending time with family and friends; and listening to music.

Q: What is your work history? Where did you work prior to becoming the BCMC technical director? What were your title and responsibilities?

A: I have worked in music for over 20 years in roles like front-of-house engineering, monitor engineer, design and install. I was technical manager at Hard Rock Live in Las Vegas for several years as well.

Q: What made you decide to apply for this job? What drew you to it?

A:I love working in the music industry and I got very burnt out traveling so much. This job and venue is the perfect fit.

Q: How would you describe your job? Will your job be more behind the scenes?

A: My job is about 99 percent behind the scenes. I front all the artists and bands, backline gear, audio gear, lighting, video, food and how much crew we will need for each show. Every show is very different. Some bands bring all their own gear, some will use just our gear and others we rent gear for them.

Q: What do you hope to bring to this position?

A: I’m there to help make everyone’s job easier. If behind the scenes runs smooth, everything else seems to as well.

Q: What kind of music do you like?

A: I enjoy all styles of music.

Q: What acts would you like to see perform at BCMC one day?

A: Too many to name.

Vince Gill will take the stage for the 2,000-seat Brown County Music Center’s grand opening on Aug. 24. That show is sold out.

Before that, the venue plans to have two soft opening events to let the community get the first sneak peek and to allow staff to test their systems. The soft openings will happen on Saturday, Aug. 17 and Wednesday, Aug. 21 featuring music from local and regional acts.

A ribbon cutting is also scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 15 including light refreshments, guided tours and a performance by NTB3 (Not Too Bluegrass Band).

All events are free, but tickets will be required for the soft opening events to allow staff to practice scanning tickets for events.

Tickets can be picked up at the venue’s box office at the Brown County Visitors Center. Tickets will be given on a first-come, first-served basis.
