Letter: Touch-a-Truck supported by many volunteers

Cordry-Sweetwater firefighter Logan Miller helps Debbie Kelley and Kason Sandgren with a fire hose at the Touch-a-Truck fundraiser at the high school.

To the editor:

We are so very thankful for the time, energy and smiles given and received by our volunteers, truck guides and sponsors. Our second Touch-a-Truck event attracted almost 500 kids of all ages on the last Saturday in June.

The truck guides and volunteers dedicated their Saturday to make sure this event was a success and the sponsors helped us make sure the Brown County Weekend Backpacks will have a meaningful portion of the money needed to buy food for our hungry Brown County children in the coming year. The event surpassed the $8,000 goal for the event, with donations given at the event and from our generous sponsors: PNC bank, Duke Energy, Kelley Rentals, Brown-Meadows Properties, C&C Equipment, Brown County Inn, Bender Lumber, Bright & Williamson Insurance, Hillard Lyons, Linda and Bill Todd, Michael Chamblee Architects, REMAX, Brown County Dragway, Hobnob Corner, Jenny Johnson, Keyed IN Property Mgt., Kristofer Sandgren, Pitbull Leather, State Farm Insurance and The Salon. Thank you so much!

Our truck guides (Access Brown County; Columbus Regional Health; Brown County Literacy Coalition; Cordry-Sweetwater, Fruitdale, Hamblen, Jackson Township, Nashville and Southern Brown volunteer fire departments; Bender Lumber, Head Start, C&C Equipment, Shelby Materials, Brown County Schools, Cummins Engine, Brown County Sheriff’s Department, Bland’s Towing, Masons CHIPS program, John and Brenda Main, and Doug and Julie Cauble) were fantastic and we really appreciate their time and dedication.

Brown County Schools, Brown County Rotary, Big Woods Pizza, Bob Gustin as the Cat In The Hat, and several dozen volunteers created a special event.

Weekend backpacks is an all-volunteer program that serves more than 140 children weekly during the school year and packed more than 31,000 pounds of food in the last school year.

We are truly blessed in our community to have so many who give so much of themselves to help make Brown County better. Thank you!

Debbie Kelley and Teresa Brown, Brown County Weekend Backpacks event organizers
