A 22-year-old Brown County woman was taken to a hospital on Aug. 19 after she crashed her truck while having a diabetic episode.

Emergency personnel responded to the intersection of Greasy Creek and Bear Wallow Hill roads just before 6 p.m. for the one-vehicle crash, according to an accident report by Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Josh Stargell.

Katelyn Martin was on the phone with her mother when she crashed into a creek after turning left at the intersection to stay on Greasy Creek. Martin’s mother reported that she could tell Martin had low blood sugar and that she had slurred speech. She said she told Martin to pull over, but Martin wanted to get home. Martin had a continuous blood glucose monitoring app on her phone, the report said.

Stargell reported that the Ford Ranger’s rear passenger wheel was in the air and the driver’s side rear wheel had about three inches of tire on the concrete bridge. Firefighters had to cut the passenger door and remove the windshield to get Martin from the vehicle, the report states.

When police arrived, EMS was tending to Martin. An ambulance took her to Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital for treatment of facial injuries and possible injuries to her left arm and leg, the accident report states.

Her vehicle was towed. Stargell reported that Martin was not wearing a seat belt, according to evidence found inside the vehicle.
