Letter: ‘What a spectacular evening’ at music center

To the editor:

Tonight (Sept. 12) was beyond my expectations. My husband had surprised me with an early birthday gift of tickets to the Brown County Music Center’s performance “An Evening With Art Garfunkel.”

Always one of my favorites, the team of Simon and Garfunkel had set the tone of the ‘60s and subsequent decades with their wonderful music. Now as a performer in his late 70s, Art Garfunkel enthralled his audience with a voice still so distinctive — soaring, lilting, gentle and clear.

The evening was both personal and entertaining as he shared his life’s stories and poetry exquisitely paced with the music we all knew and loved: “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” “Sounds of Silence” and many more.

The new performance venue is a delight with acoustics that highlight both the vocalist and musician. The structure itself is a feast for the eyes — clean lines with giant wooden beams greet you when you enter. The auditorium, while large enough to seat 2,000, feels intimate and friendly.

During the intermission I had the opportunity to talk with another patron and her husband. They had traveled to Brown County from Seymour. She shared with me they had spent their honeymoon in Brown County 48 years ago. I was so proud to hear how much they loved our new music center and that they couldn’t wait to return and spend more time in Brown County. She talked about how blessed we are to live here — I agree.

As we exited, I heard another patron saying she cried during several songs because they brought back such wonderful memories. I was right there with her.

The audience loved this performance. We loved the auditorium, the performer Art Garfunkel and his music, and the memories — both those he brought through his music and those that went home with everyone this evening.

The Brown County Music Center is a treasure for all to enjoy. What a spectacular evening!
