Letter: Students, staff donated to Weekend Backpacks

To the editor:

The Brown County Weekend Backpacks board of directors would like to thank the school corporation, Dr. Hammack, the administration, teachers, workers, and all the students for the food that was collected for the backpack program on the week of Sept. 9.

The high school donated canned spaghetti and meatballs. The junior high donated granola bars. The intermediate school gave us canned ravioli with meat. Helmsburg gave individually wrapped cheese crackers. Sprunica donated canned chili and beans. The CRC donated individually wrapped peanut butter crackers. And the administration, including transportation, food service, maintenance, “white house,” technology and school board, donated peanut butter, canned tomato soup and canned tuna.

All this food is greatly appreciated. Our shelves are full for the start of our packing of food for students who need food for the weekends.

Brown County Weekend Backpacks is a 501(c)3, community-led program to keep hungry children fed with nutritious food all weekend long throughout the school year. During the 2018-19 school year, 4,342 bags of food were packed, meaning about 15 ¾ tons of food distributed to hungry children.

Our goal for this school year is to increase our numbers of bags packed, reaching more students needing food for the weekends so they will return to school ready to learn.

If you would like to help with this service to our children of Brown County, financial contributions may be given to Brown County Weekend Backpacks and mailed to P.O. Box 160, Nashville, IN 47448.

Thank you for your donations.

Jan Swigert, president of BCWB board of directors
