Puppet show to return this month
The Melchior Marionettes will return to Nashville with “The Slightly Haunted Puppet Show” at the Brown County Playhouse, 70 S. Van Buren St., Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 17 through 19, all shows at 1 and 3 p.m.
Peggy Melchior will bring her ghoulish cast of traditional Halloween characters — juggling scarecrows, dancing skeletons, flying ghosts, a kitchen witch and more. The 30-minute show will include a guest appearance by Gertrude the Witch from Peewinkle’s Puppets.
Tickets are $8 per person; children 2 and younger are admitted free.

Fall festivities planned at Deer Run
Brown County Parks and Recreation invites the community to join in fall festivities beginning Friday, Oct. 18 at Deer Run Park, 1001 Deer Lane.
The Fall-O-Ween Party will be Friday, Oct. 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. The event is family-friendly, with food, hayrides, a weenie roast and more. An outdoor movie will be shown starting at 8 p.m. This is a free activity.
The fourth annual Fear Run at Deer Run Haunted Trail will be open from 8 to 11 p.m. on Oct. 18, 19, 25 and 26 on the trail around the park. The ticket booth will be at the upper concession stand. Adult entry is $7, or $5 for children younger than 12. This is a fundraiser for parks and rec programming.

2 fall festivals taking place in Helmsburg
HELMSBURG — Two family-friendly fundraising events are happening on weekends in October at the Jackson Township Fire Department, 4831 Helmsburg Road.
The eighth-annual BucCornEar Festival will take place on Saturdays, Oct. 19 and 26 from 4 to 7 p.m. All are welcome to enjoy food, games and activities. There will be a live house burn, a live power line demo by REMC, corn shucking and shelling, and a firefighter challenge.
The Friendly Forest, for all ages, will take place on Friday and Saturday evenings in October: Oct. 18, 19, 25 and 26. Come in a costume to trick-or-treat in the woods and enjoy snacks and drinks at the fire station. The cost is $1 per child, adults free.

Visit county landmarks on history tour
Brown County’s history is tied closely to the story of the land. Ride along with guide David Rupp and learn the story of Brown County from pre-settlement days to the present, visiting historical landmarks throughout the southern part of the county. Stops will include the state park, Stone Head, Pikes Peak, the 10 O’clock Treaty Line and Elkinsville.
A highlight to this tour is the Story Inn, home to the Blue Lady Ghost and a homegrown Hoosier lunch. The tour can also be booked as a private tour if Rupp is available.
Tours will take place on Mondays, Oct. 21 and 28, Nov. 4 and 11 from 9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4 p.m. Tickets are $30 per person. For more information, call 812-679-8978.
Donations, stations needed for trail
On Halloween night, hundreds of children and families will walk the Salt Creek Trail in Nashville to collect candy. Last year, 35,000 to 45,000 pieces were given out, according to Brown County Parks and Recreation staff.
Brown County parks and rec at Deer Run Park and the Brown County YMCA on Willow Street are taking donations of Halloween candy from now through Oct. 31. Drop them off at either place.
The groups also are offering local people the chance to set up trick-or-treat stations along the Salt Creek Trail on Halloween. The trail, which starts at the YMCA, provides a safe, centrally located place for all Brown County children and visitors to celebrate the holiday. Farmers market Sunday to feature fall celebration
The Nashville Farmers Market invites the community to a fall celebration on the final market day of the season, Sunday, Oct. 27 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Brown County Inn parking lot, 51 State Road 46 East.
This event is designed for children, featuring apple taste-testing and paint-your-own-pumpkin activities.

‘High Spirits’ at T.C. Steele State Historic Site
BELMONT — Enjoy an evening of cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while exploring the “world beyond the living” at T.C. Steele State Historic Site on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 5 to 7 p.m.
At “High Spirits,” guests can learn how belief in the supernatural and advances in science went hand-in-hand during T.C. Steele’s early years and watch a magic show by Richard Darshwood.
