All welcome at regular discussion group

The Fourth Wednesday Discussion Group will discuss “how music affects the emotions” as the October topic. The group of adults meets from 1 to 3 p.m. each fourth Wednesday of the month at the Brown County Public Library. The next meeting will be Oct. 23.

Bring a CD of some of your favorite music (any type) to share with others and be prepared to discuss how various types of music makes you feel and the role that music plays in our lives.

Fundraisers scheduled for humane society

The Brown County Humane Society is conducting an online auction through Thursday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. More than 100 donated items are available, including a sightseeing flight over Brown County, an elephant experience at the zoo, works by local artists, Disney tickets, an Indy Car experience, tickets to area attractions, vacations, jewelry and accessories and more.

All proceeds benefit the shelter animals. Items can be bid on at 32auctions.com/bchumane.

Tickets also are available for the Brown County Humane Society’s 12th annual Chocolate Walk, taking place Saturday, Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. 5 p.m.

Tickets are $25 through Thursday, Oct. 31, then prices rise to $30 on Friday, Nov. 1. They can be purchased online at bchumane.org/chocolate-walk-tickets, or a limited number of tickets will be sold in person at the Brown County Art Gallery (1 Artist Drive), Visitors Bureau (211 S. Van Buren St.) or humane society (128 State Road 135 South).

History program for kids offered downtown

The final Hands on History program, for children ages 8 to 12, will take place at the Brown County History Center on Thursday, Oct. 24. The program enables children to engage in many of the day-to-day activities experienced by children living in pioneer times. Activities take place from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Pioneer Village and the History Center, 90 E. Gould St.

Meet town council candidates at library

The public is invited to meet Nashville Town Council candidates Thursday, Oct. 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane.

All are welcome to bring questions and concerns about Nashville and connect with the candidates for the council.

Free writing workshop planned at library

A free writing workshop series in spoken word, poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction is taking place at the Brown County Public Library through December.

The Indiana University Master of Fine Arts creative writing program and IU’s Center for Rural Engagement will host “Dirt Songs: Telling our stories through poems, prose and the spoken word.” All levels of writers are welcome.

Sessions will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sundays and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays. The next sessions are Thursday, Oct. 24 and Sunday, Oct. 27.

Trap shoot, pistol competition this month

GNAW BONE — The Brown County Shrine Club will host a still board, trap shoot and pistol competition on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Pittman Farms, 6088 State Road 46 East.

Prizes will be awarded at each round. All proceeds will benefit the Brown County Shrine Club.

Antique machinery association swap meet

The Brown County Antique Machinery Association will have a swap meet Saturday, Oct. 26 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the 4-H fairgrounds in Nashville. Tractors, lawn tractors, parts, gas engines and miscellaneous items will be included. Food items will be available. Admission is free.

Shop crafters’ booths at Parkview church

Parkview Church of the Nazarene will host the Brown County Handmade Market on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. More than 75 indoor and outdoor booths will be set up filled with “all things handcrafted,” plus food booths, a silent auction and free kids’ activities.

Grand Ole Opry veteran coming to Bean Blossom

BEAN BLOSSOM — The community is invited to attend Harvest Fest on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Bean Blossom Community Church, 5046 State Road 135 North.

The event will feature food, music, games, a bounce house and a special concert by singer-songwriter and storyteller Daryl Mosley.

From countless appearances on “The Grand Ole Opry” to classic shows at the famous Bluebird Cafe, to a touring schedule of more than 150 concerts per year, Mosley has been sharing his songs and his stories with America for more than 30 years.

Free filmmaking workshops offered at library

The Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane, is hosting free filmmaking workshops in partnership with the IU Center for Rural Engagement, IU Cinema and Cicada Cinema through December.

Participants of all levels are welcome to join on the fourth Saturday of each month and learn about filmmaking. Each session has been focusing on a different aspect:

  • Oct. 26 — Lighting
  • Nov. 23 — Sound
  • Dec. 21 — Editing

These workshops build upon the rural arts series that IU Center of Rural Engagement launched last year as a way to engage Brown County residents in the art of filmmaking, empowering participants to share their own stories and bring their creative visions to life.

Chili supper and mystery auction at center

SPEARSVILLE — Hickory Ridge Community Center will host a chili supper and mystery auction Saturday, Oct. 26 starting at 5 p.m. at 2314 Hickory Ridge Lane.

The Harris Sisters and Barry Elkins will provide entertainment.

Annual celebration to be at Nineveh church

HAMBLEN TWP. — Neighborhood Church of God, 7440 Sweetwater Trail, will have its annual homecoming on Sunday, Oct. 27. Sunday School begins at 10 a.m. and the service at 11 a.m., followed by a pitch-in lunch. All are welcome.

Visit county landmarks on history tour

Brown County’s human history is tied closely to the story of the land. Ride along with guide David Rupp and learn the story of Brown County from pre-settlement days to the present, visiting historical landmarks throughout the southern part of the county.

Stops will include the state park, Stone Head, Pikes Peak, the 10 O’clock Treaty Line and Elkinsville.

A highlight to this tour is the Story Inn, home to the Blue Lady Ghost and a homegrown Hoosier lunch. The tour can also be booked as a private tour if Rupp is available.

Leaf pickup available for town residents

In-town Nashville residents are able to have leaves picked up on Wednesdays, Oct. 30 and Nov. 13. Bag leaves and leave them by the curb.

Only leaves will be picked up for disposal — no trash, sticks or other foreign objects. Bags will not be picked up if any non-leaf objects are in the containers.

Save the date for food certification class

The dates for the next ServSafe Food Manager Certification class will be Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 29 and 30 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday and 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. The test will be given on the 30th starting at noon.

The cost is $125. This cost may be increasing in 2020. Class size is limited to 12 people.

The class will use the 7th edition of the ServSafe Food Manager text with updates for the 2017 Food Code.

All food establishments, unless nonprofit or serving only prepackaged food requiring no refrigeration, are required to have a certified food manager on staff. When Indiana adopts the 2017 Food Code, it will be a requirement to have a certified food manager onsite at all times that the establishment is open for business.

Contribute items to library time capsule

The Brown County Public Library staff has decided to commemorate the 100th birthday of the library by preparing a time capsule to be opened in 2119 during the bicentennial of the library.

If anyone in the community has pictures, articles or other library memorabilia to contribute to the time capsule collection, please bring them to the library between now and November. If they are not included in the capsule, they will be returned to their owners.

During November the library will choose a day for those who are interested to see the items collected. Afterward, staff will seal the capsule with the plan for it to be opened in 100 years.

Alpha Course offered through local church

Parkview Church of the Nazarene, 1750 State Road 46 East offers an Alpha Course on Mondays through Nov. 25 from 5:50 to 8 p.m. The group will discuss answers to questions such as, “What is the meaning of life?” “What am I doing here?” or “Is there a God?” in a non-judgmental, non-denominational place. Each week there is a meal, video and discussion.

Medicare seminar offered in Nashville

A free Medicare 101 seminar will be offered the first Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m. at McGinley Insurance Agency, 145 S. Jefferson St., diagonally across from The Salvation Army.

The seminar is for people who are new to Medicare or not happy with their current plan, and those who have questions about anything related to Medicare.

Youth program offered at Unity Baptist

HAMBLEN TWP. — The Word of Life youth program has begun at Unity Baptist Church, 7361 Spearsville Road. It will meet on Wednesday nights from 6 to 8:15 p.m. through the end of April 2020.

Game library available at the local Toy Chest

The Toy Chest, 125 S. Van Buren St., has created a game library that locals can use for a $10 annual membership fee.

Game library members can check out one game at the Toy Chest register. Games can be kept for a week or they can be renewed for another week. If the game is late, $1 will be charged each day up to the price of the game.

Bluebird box sale to benefit local club

Recycle center will take bagged trash for $2

The Brown County Recycle Center now accepts trash at its drive-through during regular hours, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays.

Drop-off costs $2 per bag. The center offers prepaid sticker books for $10 or $20, with five or 10 yellow stickers to affix to trash bags up to 55 gallons.

Book-a-Librarian service offered

Individuals or small groups can make an appointment with a Brown County Public Library librarian through the free Book-a-Librarian service.
