Peaceful Valley Heritage

Peaceful Valley Heritage Inc., a preservation group, meets the second Tuesday of each month. The next meeting will be at the Brown County Community Foundation building, 209 N. Van Buren St., on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 6:30 p.m. All are welcome.

Cemetery preservation

The Brown County Cemetery Preservation Society meets the second Tuesday of each month. The next meeting will be in the archives room at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St., Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 4:15 p.m.

The society is a committee of the Peaceful Valley Heritage group. All are welcome.

Pioneer Women

The Pioneer Women’s Club meets each Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St. Interested women are welcome.

Rotary club

The Brown County Rotary Club will meet at 7:15 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 14 at Nashville’s Artists Colony Inn, 105 S. Van Buren St.

The guest speaker will be Kim Robinson, fellow Rotarian and CEO of the Brown County YMCA. Robinson will discuss YMCA programs that address the needs of almost every demographic of Brown County. These include Silver Sneakers, Access Brown County, the Community Thanksgiving Dinner and the Hilly Half.

Robinson grew up in Columbus and earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Indiana University. She and her husband, Bill, have lived in Brown County for 25 years and raised two children.

Robinson has been associated with the YMCA for 20 years, joining when it was in the Professional Building to do after-school care, swimming lessons, aerobics and yoga. She became chief executive in 2005.

Members of the community — especially those interested in exploring opportunities to participate in projects and to be of service to the community — are invited to attend.

Lions club

The Brown County Lions Club meets the third Tuesday of each month at the Seasons Lodge and Conference Center, 560 State Road 46 East, with a dinner meeting at 6:30 p.m. The next meeting will be Nov. 19.

The Lions board meets the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane. Anyone interested in Lions is invited to attend. The next board meeting will be Dec. 3.

The Lions Club also has two fundraisers in progress. The annual Lions Fruit Sale will be Friday and Saturday, Dec. 13 and 14 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Parkview Church of the Nazarene annex, 1750 State Road 46 East. Oranges, grapefruits, red delicious apples and juices are available for purchase. Fruit can be ordered by calling Gloria Berryman at 812-988-4465. Lions members will be calling to take orders from previous customers. Orders will be taken through Friday, Nov. 15. Mixed bags of fruit may be selected at pick-up time.

Double-value coupon books to be used at local businesses will be sold at the IGA on Saturdays, Nov. 16, 23, Dec. 14 and 21. Books are $10 from any Lions member, Fifth Third Bank, the Brown County Convention and Visitors Bureau Visitors Center, Carmel Corn Cottage, Health for “U” and the Helmsburg General Store.

Funds raised from these projects support community events and programs, including the Spring Blossom Parade, Fourth of July fireworks, scholarships and local grants. Statewide organizations like Leader Dogs for the Blind and the Indiana School for the Blind are also supported.

Genealogical society

The Brown County Genealogical Society has three upcoming events:

  • Thursday, Nov. 14: Author Jen Selinsky will visit for a special presentation, “Written Heritage: Finding My Ancestry Through a Journal,” at 1 p.m. at the Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane. She will talk about her great-grandmother, Alwine Baurman, and her travel journal, “First Generation Abroad.” After the presentation, Selinsky will have copies of the book available for purchase, as well as the original journal for browsing.
  • Thursday, Dec. 12: Annual Christmas party, 1 p.m. at the library. Members will bring desserts and/or finger foods. Visitors are welcome.
  • Thursday, Jan. 9: Annual membership meeting, 1 p.m. at the library. Agenda includes election of a board member, discussing ideas for upcoming meetings, sharing of research successes and “brick walls.”

Herb society

The Brown County Herb Society meets the third Monday of each month. The club will meet in the lower level at the Brown County Public Library on Monday, Nov. 18 at 3 p.m. All are welcome to join.
