CPR/first aid class offered two nights
A CPR/first aid/AED class with certification from the American Heart Association will be taught at the Career Resource Center of Brown County on Monday, Nov. 25 and Monday, Dec. 16 from 5 to 8 p.m. both evenings. The cost is $60. Call 812-988-5880 for more information or to register.

STEM competition open to high school students
INDIANAPOLIS — Health & Science Innovations (HSI) is accepting applications for teams of high school students to compete in the inaugural IDEAA Challenge.
Over five months, teams will work to create an innovative solution to a renewable energy challenge.
The details of the challenge will be announced at the IDEAA Challenge Kick-Off Event, which will be in downtown Indianapolis on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 2 to 4 p.m.
Teams will be offered workshops in innovation, design, engineering, advanced manufacturing and automation and have access to prototyping equipment to help develop their ideas.
At the final ceremony in April, cash prizes of $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000 will be awarded to first-, second- and third-place teams by a panel of industry and academic leaders.
Applications for teams of two to four Indiana high school students will be accepted through Friday, Nov. 22. Interested students should submit applications at scienceinnovations.org/ideaa-challenge.
Health & Science Innovations is a nonprofit organization dedicated to removing barriers to careers in the STEM fields. HSI connects students with mentors and internship opportunities to develop pathways to employment in STEM fields for otherwise disconnected or under-employed people.
Start thinking of filing your FAFSA now
Hoosier students and families are encouraged to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is now open for the 2020-2021 school year.
The FAFSA must be filed by April 15, 2020. All students should file a FAFSA, regardless of family income. In addition to determining eligibility for state and federal financial aid, many colleges require a completed FAFSA to award merit and need-based scholarships.
Filing the FAFSA is critical for Indiana’s 21st Century Scholars, who must file on time to earn the state scholarship that pays for up to four years of college tuition.

Enrollment open for 21st Century Scholars
Applications for the 21st Century Scholar program are being accepted. The program offers income-eligible Hoosier students up to four years of paid tuition at an eligible Indiana college or university after they graduate from high school, dependent upon financial need.
In middle school and high school, scholars are connected to programs and resources the help them stay on track for college and career success.
Applications must be received by June 30 of the student’s eighth-grade year. Scholars pledge to graduate with a Core 40 diploma and cumulative grade-point average of at least 2.5. They also pledge to abstain from illegal drugs and alcohol and illegal activities.

CRC adds hours for high school completion
Students can earn a high school diploma by spending six hours per week at the Career Resource Center of Brown County. Classes focused on the high school equivalency assessment exam — formerly called GED classes — are taught year-round from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays and from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the CRC, 246 E. Main St. There is no charge for the classes.
Students who cannot attend then can arrange instruction by appointment or by distance learning.
Those enrolled in adult education may be eligible for free job training through WorkOne.

Medical assistant certification offered at CRC
A 14-week certified clinical medical assistant class (CCMA) will begin in early 2020 at the Career Resource Center of Brown County, in partnership with Columbus Regional Hospital and Ivy Tech.
