Master Gardeners to host open house, training

The Brown County Master Gardeners invite any interested home gardeners in the community to attend the December meeting and open house on Tuesday, Dec. 10 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Exhibit Building on the Brown County Fairgrounds, 802 Memorial Drive.

All are welcome to meet other local gardeners and learn about “plants of the season” such as amaryllis, poinsettia and Christmas cactus.

Local grower Linnea Good of Linnea’s Greenhouse in Unionville will be present to share information and answer questions. She will bring potted amaryllis, hyacinths and paperwhites, which will be available for purchase.

Light refreshments will be provided. There will also be information and registration materials on hand for the upcoming 2020 Master Gardener Basic Training to begin in February.

A Purdue Master Gardener Basic Training will be offered on Tuesday evenings, Feb. 18 through May 19, 2020, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Purdue Extension Brown County Office, 802 Memorial Drive.

Topics included are:

  • plant science,
  • soils and plant nutrition,
  • fruit and vegetable gardening,
  • pesticide safety and alternatives,
  • organic gardening,
  • plant disease diagnosis,
  • insect identification and control,
  • weed identification and control,
  • animal pests,
  • herbaceous ornamentals and flowers,
  • woody ornamentals,
  • lawn care,
  • invasive species,
  • native plants.

Purdue Extension specialists, extension educators, advanced Master Gardeners and local horticulture experts serve as instructors.

The program is designed to train volunteers to assist with horticultural education programs for Purdue Extension. Participants enter a specially designed training program in home horticulture, and upon completion of the training program, are identified as Master Gardener interns. At that time, the volunteers work to provide information in the areas of gardening and horticulture under the guidance of Purdue Extension in order to become certified Master Gardeners.

Pre-registration is required. The cost is $150 for one, or $200 for a couple sharing a manual.

Those interested in registration information should contact Purdue Extension Brown County by calling 812-988-5495 or e-mailing [email protected].
