Brown County food pantries still open

Three food pantries in Brown County remain open during the COVID-19 pandemic with precautions in place to protect customers and volunteers.

The kitchen at Mother’s Cupboard will continue to provide carry-out food, but only through the front window as a way to reduce physical interaction and contact with building surfaces.

The kitchen will continue to serve hot meals seven days a week from 4 to 6 p.m., no questions asked.

Kitchen volunteers are reminded to not work if they have any symptoms of illness. Additional volunteers will be needed to fill in for volunteers who are unable to work. Anyone interested in volunteering at Mother’s Cupboard can contact Chef Sherry by text at 812-929-9211.

St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry and Warehouse, 2901 Long Lake Road, will continue to operate at regular hours, Mondays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon.

Toiletries and food are still available, including vegetables, bread, fruit and meats. St. Vincent de Paul received donations from seven local churches, Hoosier Hills Food Bank, Midwest Food and Kroger, along with grants from Walmart and Sam’s Club.

As a precaution, the pantry will provide curbside service and bring items to vehicles, according to board member Shirley Boardman.

Clothing, furniture and household goods will be available on an emergency basis, as St. Vincent de Paul tries to limit the number of people inside the building.

About 10 percent of the county’s population is currently served by the pantry and warehouse, Boardman said.

If you know someone who needs food, but may be homebound or does not have transportation, you can pick up food for them through a proxy system. Proxy forms are available from the pantry. Call 812-988-8821 for more information.

The Salvation Army’s food pantry will still be open, but will operate as a drive-thru. Normal hours are Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Visitors are asked to pull into the back parking lot and call 812-988-7019 for service.
