Gerhard H. Arndt, age 73, passed away Wednesday morning, March 25, 2020 at the Columbus Regional Hospital. He was a resident of Brown County.
Gerhard was born Sept. 8, 1946 in Grube, Germany to his parents, Paul and Lisa K. (Nolting) Arndt. He was a 1965 graduate of Brown County High School and went on to serve as a Sergeant with the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. Gerhard received the Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal while in the service.
He retired in 2000 from the Transportation Department of Eli Lilly and Co. in Indianapolis after 30 years of service. Gerhard also has worked for the last 27 years in maintenance for Salt Creek Golf Course.
He enjoyed playing golf and carded his only hole-in-one at Indian Springs Golf Course in Trafalgar. Gerhard also enjoyed deer, rabbit and mushroom hunting. He enjoyed tending to his vegetable and flower gardens, playing video games on his iPad and playing board games, with chess being his favorite game. Gerhard was a fan of Indiana University Men’s Basketball.
He was preceded in death on Aug. 1, 2007 by his loving wife of 39 years, Sheila (Close) Arndt, whom he married on Jan. 27, 1968 in Cherry Point, NC. Gerhard was also preceded in death by his father, Paul and a granddaughter, Emily Youngblood.
He is survived by his mother, Lisa K. Arndt of Brown County; children, Tiffany (Mike Grubb) Arndt of Bloomington, Tina (Steve) Youngblood of Brown County, Tim Arndt of Brown County, Terry (Amanda) Arndt of Brown County, Toby (Jessica) Arndt of Lafayette and Jeff (Terra) Arndt of Brown County; siblings, Marianne (David) Hedrick of Bargersville and Klaus (Judy) Arndt of Brown County; grandchildren, Jared (Breah) Isley, Nate Isley, Hunter and Kody Featherstone, Colton Youngblood, McKenzie Farrell, Bradley, Wesley, Parker and Nicklaus Arndt, Zoe, Jackson, Trevor, Kaleb Arndt, Rylee, J.J. and Holden Arndt.
The Rev. Burt Brock will conduct a private family graveside service on Monday at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood. Military rites will be presented by the Greenwood and Whiteland Honor Guards, as well as, the United States Marine Corps. Arrangements have been entrusted to Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center in Morgantown.
