Brown County High School senior Emma Summers was among the 40 students from throughout the state named as 2020 Indiana Academic All-Stars.

The students were selected from a field of 280 nominees.

The IASP Indiana Academic All-Stars program salutes academic excellence in the same manner that student athletes traditionally are honored. Academic All-Star distinction recognizes seniors who excel in the classroom, are actively involved in their schools and communities and take on leadership roles in those activities. The program is produced by the Indiana Association of School Principals.

Each public and private high school was able to nominate one senior for consideration.

Selection of the school’s nominee is based upon a mathematical formula that combines the SAT or ACT composite score and the seven-semester grade-point average; aacademic achievements and honors, academic courses and academic extracurricular activities; and other extracurricular activities, community service and leadership qualities.

Student awards will be given at a later date by DePauw University, Indiana University Bloomington, Purdue University and the Indiana Association of School Principals. Herff Jones provides plaques to the all-stars and their influential educators.

  • Alayna Jacobus, Brown County Intermediate School, Grade 6.

Those students competed against children through eighth grade from schools across the region.

The winner, for the second year, was 10-year-old fifth-grader Yena Park from University Elementary School in Bloomington. She was awarded a trip to the National Spelling Bee semifinals and championship finals May 24-29 in National Harbor, Maryland, paid for by The Media School and the School of Education.
