Man loses control, vehicle flips three times

A 54-year-old Greenwood man was injured after he lost control of his vehicle while driving on State Road 135 North, causing it to flip three times.

Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Kyle Minor responded to the crash near Bailey Lane just after 7:30 p.m. May 19. The driver, John McCain, told Minor he was driving north on 135 when he began to lose control. He tried to correct it, but could not.

A witness driving behind McCain reported that McCain was alert and out of the vehicle right after the crash.

McCain had a small amount of blood on his head and was checked out by EMS. Due to his age, EMS personnel said he should go to the hospital, but McCain said he would have his girlfriend take him.

McCain’s vehicle was towed. It was marked unknown on the report if he was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Suspicious person report ends with two arrests

Two men were arrested May 14 on allegations of possessing drugs and stealing a Slim Jim after police responded to a report of suspicious men at a local gas station.

Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy William Pool received a call from another deputy who had just left the gas station. An employee had told the other deputy, Sgt. Jimmy Green, that the men in the parking lot seemed intoxicated and had tried to sell him drugs, according to a police report.

The employee said he saw one of the men — later identified as 18-year-old Braden Fields from Columbus — trying to steal Slim Jims from the store. But when he was confronted, the other man with him, 19-year-old Kevin Corrales from Seymour, bought him one, the report said.

Officers found vehicle in the parking lot with significant driver’s side damage and a blown tire. Fields was sitting in the driver’s seat of the car, passed out. Officers tried to wake him up with no success, so they called an ambulance to check him out, the report said.

When Pool went to the passenger side of the vehicle, he was able to wake up Fields, who became combative. When he was asked to exit the vehicle, Fields jerked away from Pool and cursed at him, the report said.

Pool noted in his report that Fields was intoxicated. He was swaying and his speech was slurred. He could also not put a sentence together; all Pool could understand was that Fields was not driving and did not know what was going on, claiming he had been asleep.

Corrales exited the gas station and said he was driving the vehicle. When asked about the damage to his car, Corrales said he was not sure what he had hit or where. Corrales said he drove to the gas station to try to air up his tires and look at the damage.

Officers smelled marijuana coming from the car. Both men were placed in handcuffs.

While patting the men down, Pool reported find a container with marijuana hash inside in Corrales’ sweatpants. He also found a container that had white powder coming from it with Xanax inside. Corrales said he did not have a prescription for it and had bought the pills for $100 in Bloomington earlier that night, the report said.

Officers also reported finding a Slim Jim that had not been paid for inside of the vehicle. At the jail, Fields admitted to stealing the Slim Jim on accident and said he meant to have his friend pay for it, but was tired of waiting on him, so he left with it, the report said.

The vehicle was towed.

On May 19, Fields was charged with resisting law enforcement, a Class A misdemeanor; public intoxication, a Class B misdemeanor; and theft, a Class A misdemeanor.

Corrales was charged with possession of a controlled substance, a Class A misdemeanor; and possession of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor.
