Brown County High School seniors gathered in the school parking lot on the evening of their would-be graduation ceremony, decorating their cars with balloons, ribbons and signs.

The high school had to cancel its group commencement due to the pandemic. However, Principal Matt Stark and the rest of the school wanted to send off their students in a special way: a parade through downtown Nashville.

The parade followed social distancing guidelines, with seniors riding in their vehicles and truck beds while locals stood along the streets shouting best wishes.

Graduating senior Tanner Bowman said the parade offered interactions that were much needed after a long quarantine.

“This really was good because I got to see all of my friends that I hadn’t seen in months,” he said.

Firefighters drove behind the parade and police helped lead and block off streets. Both groups supported the seniors, honking their horns and yelling congratulations.

“We wanted to recognize the accomplishments of these seniors, especially after all they have been through this year,” Stark said.
