Woman charged with high-level felony for meth

A 25-year-old Bloomington woman faces a Level 3 felony in Brown County after police reported finding 170 grams of methamphetamine in her possession during a traffic stop on June 6.

Nashville Police Office Cody Poynter stopped a vehicle without a working license plate light at the intersection of State Road 46 East and Salt Creek Road. The driver, Krisandra Creech, was acting nervous during the stop and told Poynter she did not have her driver’s license on her, his report said.

She initially gave Poynter a fake name and birthday, but then confessed she had given him fake information because she was afraid about not having a driver’s license, the probable cause affidavit states.

Her driver’s license showed it was suspended.

Creech told Poynter she had was coming from Bloomington and was heading to a storage unit to get her clothes. She told Poynter there was nothing illegal in her vehicle and granted consent for a search, the affidavit states.

Police reported finding a metal container in a backpack on the passenger floorboard. In the container were several glass pipes, a scale, a large quantity of meth, two soda cans with false bottoms, and a baggie with smaller bags inside, according to the affidavit.

When asked if everything in the car belonged to her Creech said, “No, but yeah.” She was arrested. When she was told what was found in the car, she admitted it belonged to her.

She was taken to the jail. While logging the evidence, police determined that the suspected meth weighed 170 grams.

On June 9, Creech was charged with a Level 3 felony for possession of meth as well as driving while suspended, a Class A misdemeanor, and possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.

Police: Man found with pants down in parking lot

An intoxicated man was arrested at McDonald’s in Nashville on May 27 after an employee reported that the man had exposed himself to a woman and her child in the parking lot.

Nashville Police Officer Cody Poynter reported seeing Larry Drake, 55, of Ellettsville, outside by his truck with his pants around his ankles, leaning over the driver’s seat. Poynter wrote in a probable-cause affidavit that Drake still had underwear on, but it was urine-covered.

He also noted that Drake’s truck was over the parking curb and inches from a tree. Poynter stood behind Drake for several seconds and he did not notice him. While standing there, Poynter reported seeing a glass methamphetamine pipe in the vehicle.

Poynter reported that Drake was “clearly impaired” and could barely stand without stumbling. He had Drake pull his pants up before placing him in handcuffs.

In a cigarette pack in the vehicle, officers reported finding a small baggie with a crystal-like substance which they believed to be meth. Poynter reported smelling alcohol on Drake; a portable breath test had his blood-alcohol level at 0.14, nearly twice the legal limit for a driver, the report said.

The woman told police that she and her daughter were sitting in the parking lot when Drake opened his truck door and stumbled out. She said she saw him pulling his pants down, so she and her daughter looked away before seeing anything, the affidavit states.

Drake was arrested and taken to the Brown County jail. On May 28, he was charged with possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony; public intoxication, a Class B misdemeanor; public nudity, a Class C misdemeanor; and possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.

Man charged after fight in Brown County jail

A fight in the Brown County Jail on May 21 resulted in an inmate being charged with a Level 6 felony.

Christopher Mack, 33, of Columbus, was charged on June 7 with battery resulting in moderate bodily injury. On May 21, Sgt. Chad Williams with the Brown County Sheriff’s Department, and Deputy William Pool responded to the jail for a report of a fight in one of the blocks.

When police arrived, jail staff had the block locked down with Mack and the victim separated. The victim told police that some of the inmates were laughing and he had asked what the joke was when Mack started getting irate with him. He argued with the victim and the victim told Mack he was done talking to him. Mack then asked the victim where he wanted to “bump” and the victim said he was done with him, the probable cause affidavit states.

Mack then reportedly began hitting the other man in the head. The victim denied hitting Mack. The victim complained of jaw pain and Williams reported seeing a large red spot on his head, according to the affidavit.

The victim was checked out by EMS. He told EMS that at one point, he was unconscious.

Mack told police that he began arguing with the victim because he was acting paranoid about the inmates laughing, then they started fighting. Mack said the two hit each other. Williams requested video from the jail to try to determine who was telling the truth.

Passenger arrested after stop for cracked windshield

A 48-year-old Nashville woman was arrested on June 9 after police reported finding meth, marijuana and LSD after stopping the vehicle she was in for a cracked windshield.

Nashville Police Officer Lindsey Downing was on patrol in the area of State Road 46 East and Salt Creek Road when she saw the vehicle. The driver told her he was taking his passenger, Cynthia Acton of State Road 46 East, to work in Brown County State Park. While writing the driver a citation for the windshield, she asked that Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Austin Schonfeld and his K9 respond to the scene because both the driver and Acton were noticeably nervous, the affidavit states.

The K9 performed a free air sniff of the vehicle and indicated narcotics were inside. During a search of the vehicle, Schonfeld reported finding the following in Acton’s purse: A clear vial and a baggie with methamphetamine inside; a metal tube with marijuana inside; a folded piece of tin foil with multiple pieces of LSD; three round orange pills; a glass pipe with crystal-like residue inside; and a cut green straw with a crystal-like substance inside, the police report said.

Acton was arrested. She told police the items in her purse belonged to her and the driver did not know she had them. The driver said he did not believe Acton was using drugs, but knew that she had in the past. The driver was given a warning for his windshield and was released from the scene.

Acton was charged on June 10 with possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony; possession of a controlled substance, a Class A misdemeanor; possession of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor; and possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.

Semi jack-knifed while driving, hit passing vehicle

BELMONT — A 28-year-old Bloomington woman was taken to a hospital on June 2 after a semi jackknifed while driving on State Road 46 West and struck her vehicle.

The crash was reported just before 8 a.m. near the intersection with T.C. Steele Road, according to an accident report by Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Horn. Horn reported seeing a guardrail with “substantial damage” and the driver of a 2017 Chevrolet Trax being treated by EMS.

The driver, Blair Beavers, told Horn she was driving east on 46 West when she came upon a semi driving west that was in a jackknifed position while driving. She said the trailer of the truck struck the driver’s side of her vehicle, which caused her to lose control.

Beavers had lacerations to her hands, face and arms. She was taken to a hospital by ambulance for further treatment.

Two witnesses reported seeing the semi driving west while its trailer was jackknifed in the eastbound lane. They said the trailer stuck Beavers’ vehicle and that the semi did not. The driver kept going.

The driver, Joshua Noblitt, 30, of Seymour, was stopped by Sgt. Don Teague with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department. He told Horn the trailer had “obvious damage.” Noblitt told Teague that his brakes locked up and the trailer did jackknife and go into eastbound traffic, but he thought the back trailer tires had gone off the shoulder, causing a jerk. He said he was unaware he had struck a vehicle.

Beavers’ vehicle was towed due to disabling damage. She was wearing a seat belt.

Two charged after traffic stop in Nashville

Two Columbus residents face criminal charges in Brown County after a vehicle they were in was stopped for suspicious activity on June 5.

Nashville Police Office Cody Poynter was on patrol in Nashville after midnight when he reported seeing a vehicle pull into the Washington Street parking lot and drive around before leaving again. Poynter then saw the vehicle almost drive off the road at the dead end of West Franklin Street. The vehicle than sat in the road for several seconds without moving, so Poynter stopped it to check on the occupants, according to a probable cause affidavit.

The driver, 45-year-old Jennifer Lee, told Poynter she had made a wrong turn and was lost. She said she did not have a driver’s license.

The passenger, 47-year-old Charles Wilkerson, gave Poynter a prison ID. He said the two were going to his cousin’s house. Lee told Poynter they had just left the Quality Inn after visiting with someone there.

Both of their licenses returned suspended when Poynter checked their information. Lee gave Poynter consent to search the vehicle, according to the affidavit. Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Austin Schonfeld reported finding marijuana in the passenger floorboard that was in Wilkerson’s immediate reach, the affidavit states.

When asking if police could search his person, Wilkerson hummed “no” twice, which made Poynter believe he had something in his mouth. After applying a pressure point under his jaw to prevent him from swallowing, Wilkerson grabbed a clear baggie from his mouth and put it in his left hand, according to the affidavit. Schonfeld then grabbed Wilkerson’s left hand and took him to the ground. Then, Wilkerson threw the plastic bag down.

Poynter noted that Wilkerson tensed up against officers and was reaching around with his left before being placed in handcuffs. Police found a metal pipe in his left front pocket.

He told police the marijuana in the floorboard was his, according to the affidavit.

Lee and Wilkerson were arrested. On June 7, Wilkerson was charged with possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony; resisting law enforcement, a Class A misdemeanor; possession of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor; and possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.

Lee was charged with driving while suspended, a Class A misdemeanor, on June 10.

Man charged for possession of marijuana

VAN BUREN TWP. — A 55-year-old Franklin man faces multiple misdemeanors in Brown County after police responded to a report of him showing up at the campsite of a woman who had a protective order against him, then found marijuana and paraphernalia in his possession.

The woman first called police just before 2 p.m. May 23 to report that James Davidson had shown up to her campsite at Sundance Lake and that he had taken some of her belongings. She said she had a protective order against him, according to an incident report by Sgt. Chad Williams with the Brown County Sheriff’s Department.

The woman said Davidson had showed up unannounced, wanting to talk to her. She sat in his truck until he left the campsite. She then walked down another path so he would not see her and was able to get a picture of him walking away, the report states. She said that Davidson had also taken food, cigarettes and money from her campsite.

Less than eight hours later, the woman called police again to report another violation. She said that Davidson was still at the campsite sitting in his truck. When Williams arrived, a truck matching the description of Davidson’s was leaving Sundance Lake. Williams stopped it and placed Davidson in handcuffs.

Davidson admitted to going to the woman’s campsite, saying she had told him the protective order was dismissed, according to the report.

A wrecker was called to the scene. When asked if there was anything illegal in the truck, Davidson told police there was marijuana in a grinder on the dashboard. Williams also reported finding a bong inside a bucket on the floorboard, the report states.

While searching the truck, Deputy Kyle Minor also reported finding a glass pipe and a piece of a broken methamphetamine pipe.

On May 24, Davidson was charged with two counts of invasion of privacy, Class A misdemeanors; possession of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor; and possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.
