Shirley A. Reed-Bruce, 84, a resident of Bloomington, Indiana, formerly of Brown County, passed from this life at 2:15 a.m. Saturday, July 31, 2021, at IU Health Bloomington Hospital.
Shirley was born April 7, 1937, on Christiansburg Road in Brown County, Indiana, the loving daughter of Ernest and Nona Allman Greathouse. On May 5, 1953, Shirley married Ralph E. Reed; he preceded her in death May 7, 2006. On March 4, 2010, Shirley married Lloyd A. Bruce; he survives.
Shirley retired from Cummins Engine Company after 17 years of service and she was the co-founder of Reed Excavating in Brown County.
She was a longtime member of the Cornerstone Baptist Church in Garden City and she attended Greasy Creek Community Church in Nashville. She cherished the time she spent with her family, and she enjoyed traveling to Tennessee and tending to her flower garden.
Her life will be cherished by her husband of eleven years, Lloyd; son, Ernie (Terrie) Reed of Nashville, Indiana; stepchildren, Roger (Tammy) Bruce of Springville, Indiana and Katrina (Dennis) Pardue of Martinsville, Indiana; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Nona Greathouse; first husband, Ralph Reed; sons, Mike and Billy Reed; sister, Janet Greathouse; and two infant siblings.
The funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, August 5, 2021, at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street; Pastor Dale Lucas will officiate. Family and friends may gather for visitation from 11:30 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home. The family requests that masks are worn once inside the funeral home.
Shirley will be laid to rest at the Garland Brook Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the donor’s choice of charities.
