WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Nearly 85% of Purdue University students living in residence halls on the West Lafayette campus say they’re fully vaccinated against COVID-19, the school says.

Overall, 75% of students, faculty and staff associated with the West Lafayette campus — 40,496 — submitted proof of full vaccination just days before classes began Monday.

Of those, school officials said 84% of students living in residence halls reported being fully vaccinated — about the same percentage reported by Purdue’s athletes, according to data updated Aug. 17.

Among Purdue’s faculty, 86% have shown proof of full vaccination, the Journal & Courier reported.

Despite the high COVID-19 vaccination numbers, the university still hopes its rate of validated vaccinations can “increase to 80%-90% overall,” said Eric Barker, dean of the College of Pharmacy.

“We are pleased that so many of our students, faculty and staff have taken responsibility and chosen to get vaccinated, but the work is not done,” he said in a news release.

Masks are currently required inside all campus buildings, regardless of vaccination status.

Before moving into a university residence or a fraternity, sorority or co-operative facility, students must be asymptomatic and submit either a completed vaccine card or a negative COVID-19 test taken five days prior to moving in, the university said.
