INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis police on Thursday identified the man whom detectives fatally shot after he pointed a gun at them.

James Williams, 33, was pronounced dead at the scene of Wednesday’s shooting inside a gas station on the city’s east side, police said.

Detectives with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s Violent Crime Unit had located Williams, a homicide suspect wanted on escape and weapons charges, and saw he was armed with a gun. They waited for him to leave the business Wednesday before approaching him, but he went back inside. Detectives followed him inside and spoke to him before he pointed a gun at the detectives, who then shot him, police said.

Medics responded to the scene and pronounced Williams dead.

No detectives or civilians were injured.

The detectives who shot the man have been placed on administrative leave. The police Use of Force Review Board will conduct a review of the shooting.

The names of the officers haven’t been released.
