INDIANAPOLIS — Three people including a student and a crossing guard suffered critical injuries after being struck in a collision Tuesday involving possibly two vehicles in front of a school on Indianapolis’ east side, police said.

All three victims, including a second adult, were transported to area hospitals, police said.

The drivers of the cars stayed at the scene and were cooperating with the investigation, police said.

The incident occurred around 4 p.m. in front of George W. Julian School in the Irvington neighborhood.

The child, whose age was not released, was a student at the school, Officer William Young of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said.

“The Washington Street corridor is a heavily traveled area with lots of folks going home or getting off work,” Young said.

Angela Braun, who lives near the crash, said speeding is a “huge” problem in the area.

“The posting says no more than 35 miles per hour down here, but you’ve got people going 50 to 55,” she told The Indianapolis Star. Police did not say whether speed was a factor in the crash.
