Eagle scores: Annika Evensoon 49, Lilly VanNess 50, Ainslie Winton 50, Abby Padgett 53, Savannah Poling 60. “We played an unfamiliar course with very tricky greens and most of the round was played in a steady drizzle. Sept. 9

Brown County 219, Whiteland 218

Coach’s comments: The Eagles traveled to the Legends Golf Course in Franklin to take on the Whiteland Warriors and came up just a couple strokes short of a victory. Neither team played exceptionally well. Brown County, which had posted rounds of 178 and 189 last week, shot a season high 219 in the one stroke loss. “Although we did lose a close one, this match should prove to be a valuable experience for us,” said Eagle co-coach Brad Baughman. Baughman said the course played a bit longer than the Eagles were accustomed to, and the players found the greens to be a bit more challenging. “In a one stroke loss like this one, the girls now understand just how important each stroke can be,” added Baughman. With the loss, the Eagles’ record in dual and tri-matches now stands at 11 wins and three losses. The Eagles have one regular season match remaining, a Wednesday, Septe. 15 date with Edinburgh at Timbergate Golf Course. The IHSAA sectional is scheduled for Sept. 20 at Cascades Golf Course in Bloomington. Scores: Annika Evenson 48, Hannah deWeerdt 56, Abby Padgett 57, Ainslie Winton 58, Lilly VanNess 61, Mattie Satter 66.

Brown County 0, Triton Central 5

No. 1 singles: Alex Crouse (TC) d. Brandon Saechao (BC) 6-0, 6-0

No. 2 singles: Tucker Hutchinson (TC) d. Eli Sichting (BC) 6-4, 6-0

No. 3 singles: Cole Thomas (TC) d. Jack Sichting (BC) 6-2, 6-1

No. 1 doubles: Quinton Potts/Avram Rund (TC) d. Austen Deckard/Trevor Shields (BC) 6-1, 6-0

No. 2 doubles: Oliver Gearlds/Griffin Sego (TC) d. Jon Kirchoffer/Owen East (BC) 6-0, 6-2

Coach’s comments: The again short-handed Eagles fell to a very good and upper classmen heavy Triton Central Tigers team on Tuesday night. The weather, long bus ride and missing our captain were all contributing factors in the loss. Our energy level was just a little down and we missed some balls that we do not normally miss. I also feel we are tired as we progress through the first part of the season.

Brown Co.: 0-9, 0-2 WIC

Sept. 1

Brown County 2, Columbus East 3

No. 1 singles: Josh Miller (BC) d. Derek Heidman (CE) 6-2, 6-3

No. 2 singles: Matthew Degner (CE) d. Jack Sichting (BC) 6-0, 6-0

No. 3 singles: Brady Redelman (CE) d. Jon Kirchoffer (BC) 6-0, 6-0

No. 1 doubles: Tyler Ernst/Henry Ulriich (CE) d. Austen Deckard/Eli Sichting (BC) 4-6, 6-4, 6-4

No. 2 doubles: Trevor Shields/Owen East (BC) d. Lincoln West/Jacob Dettmer (CE) 6-4, 6-4

Coach’s comments: The Eagles lost a very competitive match with the Olympians of Columbus East. The Eagles were victorious at No. 1 singles with Josh Miller winning in straight sets. The No. 2 doubles team of freshmen Owen East and Trevor Shields came away with another good win. They also won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Sophomores Jack Sichting and Jon Kirchoffer were playing in new positions and had very tough opponents. Both of these players improved throughout their matches and will continue to improve upon their games as they play older and more competitive players. The excitement of the night and deciding match came down to seniors Eli Sichting and Austen Deckard at no. 1 doubles. They were pushed into a full third set and were just a few close shots from taking their match and the match for us. I will say that after a struggle with our effort on Tuesday at Triton Central, this team tonight had more energy and played hard. If they keep up their intensity, I see victories for the Eagles in the near future.

Brown Co.: 0-9, 0-2 WIC

Sept. 2

No. 1 singles: Zack Hamilton (OV) d. Josh Miller (BC) 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (9)

Owen Valley 3, Brown County 0

No. 1 singles: Dev Patel (OV) d. Brandon Saechao (BC) 8-1

No. 2 singles: Cooper King (OV) d. Wesley Bethards (BC) 6-1

No. 1 doubles: Caleb Bixler/Carson Robertson (BC) d. Brandon Saechao/Wesley Beathards (BC) 6-0

Coach’s comments: The Eagles traveled to Spencer to take on Western Indiana Conference foe Owen Valley Patriots. The Eagles came off a close loss to Columbus East and played for the first time with a full roster and were defeated 1 to 4. No. 2 doubles team of Owen East and Trevor Shields came away with the lone point for the Eagles with a dominating third set super tie break win 10-3. This came on the heels of a strong second set. This freshman duo has started to understand how to face adversity and come away with a victory. Josh Miller, playing at No. 1 singles, struggled in his first set, but came roaring back with a strong second set to force a third set super tie break. Unfortunately, he lost the tie break 9-11. This was a very exciting match to watch and if a few shots fall in his favor, he would have won the match. Once again both Jack Sichting and Jon Kirchoffer played No. 2 and No. 3 singles respectively and were defeated. I did see marked improvement in both of their games. Seniors Eli Sichting and Austen Deckard playing No. 1 doubles had a solid match and just fell short in a 4-6, 3-6 loss. For the first time this season we had enough players to play some junior varsity matches. It was good to see both Wesley and Brandon get some court time. The Eagles will take a little break over the Labor Day long weekend and return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 7 as they host state ranked Franklin Community High School.

No. 2 singles: Trevor L (F) d. Wesley Bethards (BC) 6-0

No. 1 doubles: Aspen Parkhurst/Tyler Jones (F) d. Wesley Bethards/Brandon Saechao (BC) 6-2

Coach’s comments: The Eagles, coming off a four day break, played an experienced Franklin Grizzly Cubs team. The Eagles were defeated 0 to 5. This was a good team from a bigger school and the Eagles played well. Josh Miller at No. 1 singles played a very good player, but was defeated 6-4, 6-1. No. 2 doubles freshmen duo of Owen East and Trevor Shields played an extremely solid match. I did see a lot of improvement in Austen as he transitioned back to No. 3 singles. Our other two matches, No. 2 singles player Eli Sichting came roaring back in the second set and so did No. 1 doubles teammates Jack Sichting and Brandon Saechao in a very tough loss. This is a busy week for the Eagles as they travel to Edgewood to play Western Indiana Conference for West Vigo on Wednesday and host another WIC competitor in Edgewood on Thursday.

Brown Co.: 0-12, 0-3 WIC

Sept. 8

Brown County 4, West Vigo 1

No. 1 singles: Josh Miller (BC) d. Ashton Matherly (WV) 6-2, 6-3

No. 2 singles: Bryce Easton (WV) d. Austen Deckard (BC) 6-4, 6-0

No. 3 singles: Brandon Saechao (BC) 1-0, forfeit

No. 1 doubles: Eli Sichting/Jack Sichting (BC) d. Gavin mcCoy/Jeffrey Brown (WV) 6-4, 6-7 (2), 1-0 (4)

No. 2 doubles: Owen East/Trevor Shields (BC) def Kuy Charters/Briston Pape (WV) 6-2, 6-4

Coach’s comments: The Eagles defeated the Vikings from West Vigo in a Western Indiana Conference match for their first win of the season. In a change from the norm of this season, the Eagles played a short-handed Vikings team and were awarded a forfeit win at No. 3 singles. The Eagles were led once again by senior Josh Miller at No. 1 singles as he won in straight sets. The Eagles winning point came from freshmen Owen East and Trevor Shields with an impressive 6-2, 6-4 win. Senior Austen Deckard playing at No. 2 singles was narrowly defeated in his first set, and played a solid second set, but came up just short. The final point for the Eagles came the No. 1 doubles team, and brothers, Jack and Eli Sichting. To my knowledge this is the first time the brothers have played together. It was an exciting match that came down to a 10 point tie-break for the third set as the match was already decided. The Eagles hope to build upon this momentum as they take on another WIC opponent in the Edgewood Mustangs Sept. 9 at the Eagle’s nest.

Brown Co.: 1-11, 1-3 WIC

Sept. 9

Brown County 2, Edgewood 3

No. 1 singles: Josh Miller (BC) d. Gavin Norris (E) 6-2, 6-0

No. 2 singles: Quinn Norris (E) d. Austen Deckard (BC) 6-0, 6-1

No. 3 singles: Mitch Deckard (E) d. Brandon Saechao (BC) 6-1, 6-1

No. 1 doubles: Zeke Weisner/Dane Weisner (E) d. Eli Sichting/Jack Sichting (BC) 6-4, 4-6, 6-4

No. 2 doubles: Owen East/ Trevor Shields (BC) d. Andrew Turner/Dani Chandler (E) 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (6)

Coach’s comments: The Eagles trying to build upon the momentum from last night’s victory were narrowly defeated by Western Indiana Conference foe the Mustangs of Edgewood. Josh Miller continued his strong play with an easy straight set win. The other team to score a point for the Eagles was the No. 2 doubles team of Owen East and Trevor Shields, who won an exciting third set tie-break easily 10 to 4. The Sichting brothers, Eli and Jack, provided a lot of excitement with a close match that came down to a full third set and the brothers came within a game of winning the set. Edgewood was just a little stronger and defeated Austen Deckard and Brandon Saechao in the middle singles position. Junior varsity player Jon Kirchoffer won both of his matches by scores of 7-5 and 7-6 (1). The Eagles will rest their arms over the weekend in order to prepare for senior night on Monday as they play the Cougars of Trinity Lutheran.

Brown Co.: 1-12, 1-4 WIC

Football

Kody Walsh carried 10 times for 138 yards and two scores for the Eagles (2-1, 1-1). Gavin Butcher and Ben Wagler had interceptions, and Spiece had a fumble recovery.

Sept. 10

Brown County 12, Indian Creek 13

Summary: Indian Creek’s James Kelly returned a fumble 93 yards for a touchdown with 4 seconds remaining to give the Braves a 13-12 WIC win at Brown County. The Eagles (2-2, 1-1) had taken a 12-7 lead earlier in the fourth quarter on a 12-yard touchdown run by Wanblee Roux and had gotten the ball back after a stop on defense. They appeared to be running out the clock, but on fourth down from the Indian Creek 7, a blitzing Kelly stripped the ball and ran for the game-winning score. Brown County’s first touchdown came on a 12-yard keeper by quarterback Seth Oliphant. Oliphant completed 7 of 14 passes for 71 yards, Malachi Nickles had three catches for 52 yards and Kody Walsh carried 19 times for 101 yards and led the defense with 11 tackles.
