Medicare annual enrollment period to begin

The annual enrollment period for Medicare advantage and prescription drug plans will run through Dec. 7.

Medicare beneficiaries are encouraged to review their plans in order to reassess their coverage and consider new options for 2022 if they desire.

Septic Summit to return to fairgrounds

The Brown County Regional Sewer District will host Septic Summit 2.0 next month at the Brown County Fairgrounds for residents to learn more about their individual septic systems.

Having a correctly functioning septic tank is important for protecting the soil and the environment. Septic Summit 2.0 provides information for homeowners with septic systems.

The summit is set to take place on Nov. 18 at the Brown County Fairgrounds, 802 Memorial Drive. Food and prizes will also be available.

Local bluebird club selling nesting boxes

The Brown County Bluebird Club’s annual bluebird nest box sale is underway. Boxes are all cedar and fully assembled. One box is $15 and two boxes are $25. If interested, call Dan Sparks at 812-200-5700.

Virtual information sessions for caretakers set

Thrive Alliance will offer a virtual information session for those interested in gaining tools for caregiving.

“Powerful Tools for Caregivers” is educational series by Thrive Alliance designed to provide caregivers with the tools needed to take care of themselves and those to whom they provide care.

The program helps family caregivers reduce stress, improve self-confidence, communicate feelings better, balance their lives, increase their ability to make tough decisions and locate helpful resources.

Classes consist of six sessions virtually via Zoom every Tuesday from Oct. 26 through Nov. 30, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Library to host activities and events

The Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane, will host several activities and events in the upcoming week.

An ATLAS (At the Library After School) session will be held at 3:15 p.m. on Oct. 28. Children can take part in several activities while enjoying some snacks.

The BCPL Craft Club will meet on Oct. 27 at 6 p.m., where attendees will make metallic fallen leaves. This activity is for adults and teens 13 and over.

The library will host Halloween Trick or tREAD on Oct. 29 and Nov. 1 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Oct. 30 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Children can enjoy a Halloween themed obstacle course and get a treat from the front desk.

Finally, children and adults of all ages can enjoy the MotionArts Dance Academy’s performance of the Children’s Nutcracker on Nov. 6 at 1:30 p.m. This abridged version tells the story of the Nutcracker Ballet.

An ATLAS session will also be held at the Cordry-Sweetwater library branch, 8751 Nineveh Road, at 5 p.m. on Oct. 27.

Antique Machinery Association swap meet

The Brown County Antique Machinery Association will have a swap meet on Saturday, Oct. 30 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Brown County 4-H Fairgrounds.

Lawn and garden tractors and equipment, gas engines, tractors and parts, as well as a flea market will be available.

Lion’s Club selling donuts

The Brown County Lion’s Club will be selling donuts, coffee, hot cider and hot cocoa on the Village Green Oct. 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The fundraiser will happen in place of the fall pancake breakfast this year.

Family game night happening in town

Healing Hearts & Memory Making, 173 S. Van Buren St., will host a Halloween themed family game night on Oct. 30 from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. Tickets are $5 each, or two for $5.

Tickets can be purchased in advance at facebook.com/HHMM.Rambo.

Costumes are optional. Snacks, water and coffee will be available.

Alpha courses return

Parkview Church of the Nazarene will host their 8th annual Alpha Course, every Monday, Nov. 1 through Feb. 7 from 5:50 to 8 p.m. The course includes a meal, a video, and a discussion.

Free legal aid phone clinic set for this week

Legal Aid will conduct a free legal service phone clinic on Tuesday, Nov. 2 for low-income residents of eight Indiana counties, including Brown County.

The clinic will take place from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Callers can expect a 10-minute phone consultation where legal professionals will answer general questions and offer legal information.

Individuals seeking consultation must register by calling Legal Aid at 812-378-0358 on Oct. 19 between noon and 2 p.m. A volunteer attorney will return a call to registered individuals between 3 and 5:30 p.m.

The next Legal Aid phone clinic will be Tuesday, Nov. 16 with the same registration requirements and time frame.

Annual Lincoln Day Dinner

The Brown County Republican Party will host their annual Lincoln Day Dinner on Friday, Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. at the Seasons Conference Center, 560 State Rd. 46.

Special guests include talk show host and author Tony Katz, Indiana State Auditor Tera Klutz and Sen. Eric Koch. Emcee will be Pete Seat.

First weekend children’s tours return

The T.C. Steele State Historic Site will have their First Weekend Children’s Tour on Nov. 6 from 11:15 a.m. to noon.

The tour is designed for ages 4 to 14. Children must be accompanied by a parent. Reservations are encouraged, but not required.

Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $5 for children. Ages 0 to 2 are free.

Craft show and bake sale set

HELMSBURG — Brown County Community Church, 2370 Main St., will host their annual craft show and bake sale on Nov. 6 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Unique handcrafted items and scrumptious homemade delights will be available to purchase.

Community night of worship

New Life Community Church, 1450 State Road 135 North, will host a night of worship on Wednesday, Nov. 17 at 6:30 p.m. A fellowship meal will be served at 5:30 p.m.

All are welcome.

Goshen Community Church to host holiday events

Goshen Community Church, 2798 Gatesville Road, will host their annual bean dinner, bake sale, holiday bazaar and quilt raffle on Saturday, Nov. 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This year’s raffle quilt is a queen size “Nine Patch” in autumn colors with a neutral background. Tickets are $1 each or six tickets for $5. The drawing for the quilt will be at 3 p.m. The winner does not need to be present at the time of the drawing. Tickets are available at the church, or by calling Ruth Fox at 812-988-7892.

The bean dinner includes a bowl of soup, two cornbread muffins, a side of slaw, dessert, and a drink for a $5 donation.

Bake sale items include pies, cookies, persimmon pudding, and much more.

Items available at the bazaar include baby and kitchen items, hats and scarves, hand crafted greeting cards, and more.

Christmas in Antique Alley returns

The second annual Christmas in Antique Alley will take place on Saturday, Dec. 4 from noon to 4 p.m. in Antique Alley.

Along with shopping at over 14 unique stores, visitors can enjoy the lights and decorations, and listen to live Christmas music performed by Indy Crossbones, a trombone quartet.

There will also be a meet and greet with Santa and a visit from some miniature donkeys from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Antique Alley courtyard.

Christmas Bazaar

St. Agnes Catholic Church, 1008 McLary Road, will be hosting a Christmas Bazaar on Friday, Nov. 5 and Saturday, Nov. 6 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Christmas ornaments, handmade items, Longaberger baskets, clothing, furniture, homemade treats and much more will be available for purchase.

A silent auction will take place on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A hotdog stand will be available from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Admission and parking are free.

Brown County Children’s Auction returns

The Brown County Children’s Fund Live Auction will be on Friday, Dec. 3 at 6 p.m. at the Brown County Inn, 51 State Road 46 East.

Participants can bid on items donated by local artists and merchants. All proceeds will buy clothes for local children.

Auction items can be dropped off at Out of the Ordinary, 61 S Van Buren St. Cash donations will be accepted at PNC Bank.

History center, pioneer village open

The Brown County History Center will now be open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Pioneer Village will have most of its buildings open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The open buildings will include the Old Log Jail, schoolhouse, cabin, tool room and Dr. Ralphy’s office. On inclement days the village buildings will be closed. The Pioneer Village will be open daily until the end of October. The history center and village are located at 90 E. Gould Street. Entry is free, donations are welcome.

The Brown County Historical Society runs, maintains and operates the Pioneer Village, which is owned by Brown County. The history center features the archives, open Tuesday and Friday, for those interested in finding information on family or cabins, or historical information related to most things in Brown County.

The History Center offers visitors an up-close look at many historical artifacts, which change often, and a gift shop that features handmade items made by the Pioneer Women’s Club.
